Well working on a laptop/desktop doesn't equal being able to read on one.
I use them for hours to, but can't stand reading on them. I print out any long articles etc. that need read. That said, that's mainly a form factor issue for me as I don't have issues reading on an iPad or PDAs etc. and will probably eventually do most of my reading on some type of LCD tablet when I find the right one for me. |

I don't like reading long articles on a PC monitor, it's got to the stage that I tend to "switch off" very easily.
I've tried electronic versions of magazines without success, and novels would drive me crazy. It's perhaps to do with 2 things, 1) As work became more PC orientated it meant long instructions available purely for on-line reading ... I grew to hate it. 2) Reading is not comfortable in front of a PC. |

Even in 2010 i never read anything longer then a few lines on my LCD at work. Long emails, contracts or articles i am used to print and read on ... paper. The old fashioned way.
And funny thing is most people here at the office do the same. |

There are many people who hate money. They used to suffer like hell, but now steve jobs has come to help them. He takes away their money and gives them a useless token in return. Everybody is happy, the world is a beautiful place.

i was one of those skeptics who declared early and with a loud voice "No IPad for me." I won't bore you with my reasoning, but it wasn't political. I neither love nor hate Apple, Amazon, Sony etc. I thought I was being pratical and I did not like the price tag.
Now, having purchased one and having read several books and spent several multi-hour reading sessions I am an enthusiast. And in particular for reading, two reasons in particular: One, I can read whatever I like and pretty much from whomever I like, thanks to the multiple reading applications, mobi, e-pub, PDF, whatever, it really doesn't matter anymore. Second, the different reading environments and the ability to customize my reading environment. The arguments of it being heavy, prone to glare and less eye friendly than an e-ink screen are all true to some degree, at least in my opinion. On the other hand it remains a great device and for me given my experience as both a Kindle and Sony owner. if I had to live with only one device, it would be an IPad, no question. On the other hand, I'm glad to live in a world with multiple choices! ![]() |

Portability
I can fit my PRS-505 in the back pocket of every pair of pants I've ever worn. So the portability is the killer app for me. I can have it with me at all times, without much fuss, no bags, no cases, much like a paperback book. I'd imagine that I'd need a backpack for an iPad, make sure that it's charged up before I head out somewhere, etc. It's hard enough for me to keep my Droid charged.
So that makes the iPad nice for reading at home. But I already have a ThinkPad with a much better resolution that I could use instead. And for that matter, there are many tablet PCs that double as laptops, which provide more options as far as plugs, webcams, etc, but pretty much the same functionality. Well, except maybe fore the cute page turn animations and great presentation that Apple is known for. Last edited by fafaforza; 06-04-2010 at 03:54 PM. |

Yes, I can obviously read on a monitor or I couldn't post on this forum etc.! When I say read, I mean really sit down and read something--be it a book, long research article etc. The form factor of PCs and laptops just sucks for that. The screens don't bother my eyes though, I can read on my girlfriend's laptop with no problem. Maybe it would be more of an issue if I was reading for hours and hours on end all the time like many here. But I rarely read for more than 30-60 minutes in any one stretch. Quote:
Exactly. As I said just above, the form factor of laptops sucks for reading. A tablet--if it's like the iPad in terms of size, weight, not putting out heat etc.--has a very good form factor for reading. I can curl up with a tablet and read it like I would a hardcover book, magazine etc.--can't do that with a laptop. At least I can't anyway. |

I've owned a string of Thinkpads and a couple of Lenovo netbooks. They suck to read books on, IMO. I like 'em fine for other uses.
It would be great if iPad were lighter for carrying around, but I never hold it to read. I didn't hold my Kindle, either. I use a rice-filled cushion to prop most often. I also use this dirt-cheap easel, which works even on cushions when I'm sprawled on my easy chair: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product You can get 'em in lots of places, online and in crafts shops and such. I don't waste money on dedicated easels and such, because I'll switch devices through the years. These easels work fine with Kindle or iPad. If I had a remote control to turn pages, I wouldn't have to touch my iPad or Kindle at all. Last edited by Maggie Leung; 06-04-2010 at 08:08 PM. |
