the Zaurus was even better. If you had a CF or SD-Card, you had to place a special named file on it, hold down one key, totally power it off (cut off battery), and power it on.
with that procedure, you get into a chinese or japanese labeled menu, which luckily has common name like USB, CF or SD in english, and could reflash from CF.

I have done that at least 2 times, when i had a Zaurus.
So, you could reflash the device without relying on any other Software, than the one in the Zaurus itself.

Doesn't the Iliad use a PDF viewer from Founder Technology (the Apabi folks) instead? Or is the Apabi PDF viewer based on xpdf?

Well, that rather depends on what's done with the info, doesn't it?

Sometimes there's a fine line between creative and destructive: whether it works or not.

Question Several Questions

I have a couple of questions about the Illiad, if someone could answer it would be appreciated. It looks like a pretty fantastic tool, especially for someone like me. I'm a Master's student, and journal articles are the norm.

1) Can I attach a USB keyboard, or any keyboard to it? Is this even possible? Writing on a device like this would be a godsend. I wouldn't have to carry my laptop at all anywhere.

2) I downloaded some videos of page changes on the Illiad. There were fantastically slow. Will this improve with software updates? Is there any way of speeding it up, such as printing PDFs to smaller sizes or using JPG rather than pdf, or black and white rather than greyscale etc? Does the size of the PDF have an impact on page speed turning?

Thanks in Advance

Welcome to the Forum, Devlar.

1) I think the current information is that you can attach the keyboard, but it doesn't actually do anything for you. If someone's gotten it to work, I'm sure they'll share.

That being said, there is an on-screen keyboard, but one of the actual iLiad holders will have to tell you what uses it can be put to -- if they can tear themselves away from their hacking attempts for a few moments.

2) The screen refresh rate is a function of the e-Ink tech itself, and is common to all the current batch of e-Ink devices. The display itself refreshes at one of two speeds: 1 second, and .5 seconds (the faster rate leaves ghosting on the screen, though most report it's not any more bothersome than ghosting on a paper page).

The other component to display change is the file itself, that is, how long it takes to create the image from the file and pass it to the screen before the screen can even start to refresh. That's where a big honkin' PDF file will bite you (pardon the pun ), that is slow things down.

Then there's the whole question of getting the PDF file sized to display legibly on the screen, but that's another topic.

On another note entirely -- did I see Bluetooth mentioned in one of those complicated dumps, guys? That looks potentially useful....

I found out, that you have to double-click for the links to do stuff. Links in PDFs work. And when i start to run the xterm, it asks if i want to execute. But then nothing happens.

Could you make a PDF file, that runs "/usr/bin/wired.sh start"? If the xpdf runs as root, that should work, right? And then we should have our network running.

Dont have any tex here, so could you please make that file?

From that file:

"mag ik nu" is Dutch. It means "can I now?" (lit. "may I now?", "darf ich jetzt?"), or when, say, playing cards, you can ask this of the dealer, meaning "may I have?". In all these instances it would be followed by a verb or noun phrase; stand-alone it means "is it my turn now?".

Hi Folks,

I have a question

With the .xeb templates for note taking, is saving the notes also possible? Or have I missed something there?

And beside that, the default thickness of the wacom pen is too thick to write down more than 10 lines of text, is this correct? How many words/letter could be written on one page?

Is erasing also working properly?

(I am in the Annotation section at the moment )

Thanks,

Greetings,
Frank
