I like this answer the most of all! I love the picture it paints in my mind.

I just figured Bookeen had a million monkeys working on the code....but maybe they haven't finished typing all of Shakespeare's works yet...

I do daily. And my department won't make false promises, especially regarding dates of release ("soon", huh?), when there are any uncertainties. Saying it "when it's done" would have been sufficient.

Well, you have regression tests so adding one new functionality like folders and release a firmware is not so hard. When things take long time to do it is usually because you are doing them in the wrong way. Inexperienced programmers usually write pretty bad code and that are hard to reuse and extend.

You enlightened me.
Maybe they are just trying new software development methodologies, perhaps instead of OOP they are using GOP ( God oriented programming ).

This explain why they use vague biblical terms like "soon", "later" to describe standard project management deadlines.

Or, you bumped into a problem that's somehow hard to solve for some reason, or you're doing something else in addition of programing.
I don't have the pretension to judge bookeen's work when i don't know what's going on there at all.

I don't know what's going on at bookeen, but i don't think they are delaying the firmware just because it's fun...

We aren't discussing if delaying a firmware is fun or not. (but we are trying to make fun of it because maybe humor is nice to play with).

Seriously, the message that go to customer is plain simple:
- lack of resources
- lack of seriousness in standard project management
- lack of communication and abuse of false promises
- heavy dependency upon third party software (and this maybe explain the delay when a bug is spotted)

And take in account that we are not speaking here of a software with the complexity of ie. a full office suite.
They are chiefly reusing existing code.

When I worked in game development, every month we had to take a week off our schedule to make a demo of the progress, because people paying money had to "see" progress, not just new lines of code. The demo was then usually thrown away, but a week was lost. Perhaps Bookeen prefers to keep silent and deliver quicker to being responsive and delivering twice as slow - especially if programmers there do all other kinds of work, and there are few of them.
I wish they would deliver at last, though...

You're absolutely right on that! BTW: I've worked for over 10 years in the computer games industry as a senior/leading game designer and normally you have to keep a very tight schedule (by all means... and that is "crunch time" = working 24/7, sleeping at the office). Somehow I can't imagine Bookeens programmer(s) "crunching"...

Yes, they don't do it because it's fun, but from what we've heared (and that's not much), it seems to be bad planning and/or some wrong decisions...

"Feature requests" and "change management" are things that are mostly overlooked in projects or handled badly (if at all...). There is a time in the project, where you can't add any new features or change something - you just have to finish the d*mn thing! (OK, you can branch off with part of the team to the new version with said features/changes, but the rest has to follow the plan.)

If that the case you have to
a ) Hire more people
or
b ) Make sure your schedule is more realist.

Throwing more resources to solve a problem only increases it. That's PM 101.
