The battered car bounced along the road just outside of the city. the road was rutted like the inside of a piece of cardboard. Harv held to the side of the car with quiet desperation. Finally, the torture ended in the middle of a cane field. Several official looking men were standing around a mound covered with a sheet. Harv recognized that the sheet meant not much good for the occupant.

"Ah, Mr Walbanger! How good of you to come!" said a mand who was wearing a business suit, possibly in defiance of the ninety degree weather in the field.

"Jefe. Didn't know I had the choice to not grace this little portion of Hell, today," said Harv, fan of the fan and cool drink on the veranda.

"Ah, well. We all have choices in every aspect of our lives."

"My choice being the cane field or an eight by ten room with crappy food and bars?"

"Precisely! I would like you take a look at this poor unfortunate gentleman under the sheet."

"Why? Is it someone I know?"

"You are acquainted with him, yes. You were seen with him at a poker game last night."

"Oh, crap! that little bean bag got himself killed? I should have stuck with him!" Harv recalled Biggles insisting on going to his own hotel under his own power after the game had broken up with the advent of the losing of the last of the $500 they had taken in to "test" Biggles' system.

"Not only killed, but in an unusual way." The Jefe gestured at the policio next to the sheet, who reached down and twitched the cover off the body.

Harv looked down and felt quite a bit of surprise. "How the heck did that happen?"

"We were hoping that you would have some idea both of who he is and how he got this way."

"Well, his name's Filthy Pierre and I have no idea how he got frozen like that, especially in the middle of a cane field."

good heavens, frozen ? in the middle of a cane field ?? in ninety degree weather ??? and it's not biggles ??? well that is surprising. actually the last bit isn't surprising. men like biggles seem to have some sort of guardian angel to protect them despite their best efforts at blithely getting themselves killed for their own damnable naïveté. in books, anyway. well this is a startling turn of events !

I'm thinking they'd better figure this out fast .... cause that block of ice isn't likely to stay frozen in 90 degree weather. And the smell might start to get ... um ..... "interesting" when that happens.

Vera and Vivaldi walked down the avenue in front of the hotel where Montsnmags was housing them. She thought growing up in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin had been boring. Here, the kids all gathered around the newly whitewashed fence to watch it dry.

"Well, when he said that we were going to be in a quiet... neighborhood, he was ceratinly right," said Vera.

"You live the life I've lived so far and you'll appreciate boring."

"I wonder what that building up there is?"

"The one with 'Ice Plant' written on the big sign over the door?"

"Maybe we could get a bucket of ice to cool our drinks tonight."

She walked down the street, dragging the small grey dog behind her on his leash. A low grade complaint muttering followed them. Outside the plant, there was a large truck parked and men were loading ice into the back of it.

Vera tied Vivaldi's leash to the post in front of the building. "Be a good boy and stay here."

"Sheesh, you run away from a bath just one time and you get treated like a criminal. This is inhumane, I tell you!"

"Just wait there. And don't talk to anyone. I don't want someone getting vaudvillian ideas on you."

"Who's the villain named Vaude?" Vivaldi yelped out, but Vera was already walking through the doorway. "Typical. Not even a little peice of bacon to give me incentive..."

With his canine hearing, Vivaldi heard Vera knock at a door and say, "Hellooo? Anyone here? I'd like to buya bag of... What the Hell?"

"I thought she wanted a bag of ice. I wonder if What the Hell is a brand name?"

Then he heard a short, sharp scream and a man saying, "Bring her along, we need to be moving fast. We'll deal with her later!"

The door to the plant crashed open and two men came out dragging a tied up and gagged Vera between them. They threw her into the back of the ice truck, locked the door, and jumped into the cab and drove off.

"Hey!" Vivaldi yelled, "Come back here! Who's going to feed me? At least cut me loose from this post so I can scrounge for myself!"

The truck turned a corner and sped off.

"Typical!"

what ??? dastardly deeds in an ice plant ???? could this be connected to recent mysterious events in a nearby cane field ??? how will vera escape ??? who are those people ???? what's going on in that "ice plant" ???? and more importantly, who's going to feed vr ??????
