Don't know what's difficult; Calibre will pull them right out.

You have a 505 and didn't get the ePub? That's a bit silly (IMHO).

Eh, I've been using mobi2html and it means going through and inspecting the images. Anyway, I did that, and now that I have a copy of an epub cover, I put the covers up in both formats so you can compare the quality yourself.

http://flickr.com/gp/slashclee/0990C2 - compare the mobipocket version of the Fellowship cover to the epub cover for the trilogy set at the end.

And, yeah, I have a 505, but I don't know how to remove the DRM from epubs (yet).

The EPUB cover for the Trilogy set is the same as the MOBI cover for the Trilogy set... again I don't see why you needed EPUB covers.

If it isn't immediately obvious when you look at the mobi covers that they've been downsampled - if that doesn't jump out at you or bother you - then you win! No reason to look for them in a different format.

It seems pretty obvious to me, though, and the epub cover image looks much clearer and sharper. You seriously don't see any difference in the clarity between http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3646/...7f4958f8_o.jpg and http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3579/...a9f7819b_o.jpg ?

The two are not the same image. The first is for the first book; the second if for the trilogy combined. One image is clearly a variation of the other, but as for "downsampling" one image is necessarily smaller than the other to include the border designs and cover text.

The images are the same. But the resolution is lower on the Mobipocket versions. You can easily see the loss of information compared to the ePub cover of Fellowship.

So for viewing on a Kindle or Sony, the larger cover will definitely look better.

If you're comfortable "liberating" DRM from ePub, you could have done that with the purchased epub and that would work with Stanza.

Please read my previous post above. The EPUB cover of FELLOWSHIP is not the same as the MOBI cover of TRILOGY. I know it's a similar image and blockier because it's reduced in size, but look at the eye and the flames (hands?) reaching around the top ring; that's a different image, not downsampling.

You'd have to compare to the EPUB cover of TRILOGY.

Mickey's copyright is up in 2023, so I'm sure the law will be changed again well before 2044.

I bought eReader and ePub editions at the same time, but I had some troubles with downloading ePub editions (namely, The Children of Húrin), which were resolved just today.
But thanks for your suggestion anyway.

If you read my post again, I did say I compared The Fellowship of the Ring ePub to the Mobipocket version. The ePub version is noticeably better. Not great though. The problem may be the software used to reduce the original image down to size.

I think it's fairly safe to say that both the epub and mobi versions of the covers were downscaled from the original master; if you check the Flickr set again I've got the covers from the Hobbit and the trilogy up and the epub versions are all consistently clearer and higher-resolution than the mobi versions but still nowhere near perfect.

What I think is that the software used to reduce The Fellowship of the Ring didn't do a good job reducing. The lines are fine and what's happened is some of the pixels for the lines are broken.

I think this problem may be AZW specific. It does not exist in the ePub. Could be something with the conversion to AZW (my guess).
underlined text not intended to be included in quote--see JSWolfe note below)
The "Shadow of the Past" text deletion also exists in the Mobipocket from Fictionwise. Perhaps it's time to start a discussion in one of the machine-agnostic forums?
