Legality really isn't the issue here. It has always been against MR rules to give explicit DRM removal instructions. "Ask for help where you got the tools" has always been the mantra when folks need more than a nudge.

"Perfectly legal" and "nobody is likely to prosecute you" are not the same things

I live in the “Live Free or Die” state and DRM annoys me a bit as, I gather, it does others. Anyway, I asked Google AI and, yes, it is illegal in the US with this caveat, “Distinction Between Stripping and Copyright: While removing DRM to read a book on a different device is technically a violation of the DMCA, courts have recognized that format-shifting for personal use is not direct copyright infringement (as long as you do not distribute the file to others).”

Right. Which is why I have reached out to those I am interested in, to at least raise the issue. If other readers did that as well, we would all be better off.
  1. The reason for this multi-page discussion is concern about the ability to have access to Amazon ebook purchases outside of a Kindle device or app.
  2. The reason people care about Amazon in particular is the large number of indie authors that are Amazon exclusive.

I had one guy make his book available and two others who said they would at least investigate further.

Well, I don't have favorite authors. I buy from many different authors and I try out new authors all the time. I'm not going to contact hundreds of different authors, especially as I don't even have a Goodreads account and I don't use any other social media either.

What do you mean? This thread is mostly about DRM removal via the new Windows app. I'm guessing you don't remove the DRM from your Kindle purchases, as you have no PC?

When Amazon dropped Mobi/KF8, they also dropped DRM Free eBooks. Without the ePub/PDF downloads, there'd be no more DRM Free.
