Only the DRM, which isn't a real security issue. Mobi is only HTML3, only 4 fonts, no CSS. The AZW3 is more like epub2 and has csss. Only the gen 1 & 2 (The DXG should have been Gen 3, but is only Gen2) are Mobi only. The K3 is oldest with azw3/KF8 and maybe oldest with WiFi.

They should never have disabled Browser based downloads last year. That was malicious behaviour.

Useless only for Amazon stuff. And the offer is just in lieu of the normal trade in offer, but you get to keep the old one.

get to keep the old one. have the problem of disposing the etrash instead of Amazon.

In fact, I've had a few upgrade offers in the past year which had already moved to "keep your trade-in", in my case a PW2. I had already taken the earlier "keep your trade-in" offer on a KK when store access was discontinued. Which is why I'm not surprised that the current offer is lousy.

I consider the PW5 cut off because if you have the 5.16.2.1.1, you are unable to get rid of it by upgrading.

PW5 is 'cut off' (from future updates). As is Kindle 11th generation 2022 edition. Both are outside the 3 year window.

Of course they'll still connect to Kindle store, for the foreseablle future.

It would appear that all the devices that do not support KFX are no longer going to be able to download books after 2026-May-20. Amazon may still send the occasional KF8 or mobi ebook to newer devices—one acquaintance of mine was rather surprised when they received a mobi version of an ebook on their 12th gen Paperwhite on 5.19.3.0.1—but both formats are pretty much toast going forward.

As for insecure formats? KF8 DRM is broken so hardly a 'secure' format. What makes mobi a more insecure format?

Topaz, mobi 7, and AZW3 are all legacy formats that all Kindles and Kindle apps support, and presumably always will (even though AZW3 fixed layout may still be broken for side-loaded titles). Some titles were never able to update to a KFX format.

KF8 has some features that never got ported to KFX equivalent (<video> <audio> support for example that are in 'enhanced editions').

Remember Kindle In Motion? That still works with Apple and Android apps. But Kindles get KFX (with no animated images), Kindle for PC gets AZW3 (with no animated images).

And also Print Replica. This also works with all of the Kindle apps and Kindles (5.18.2 or later - maybe 5.16.2 as well?).
