Can you read complete books on an LCD screens?

I'm not speaking of "I like the original eInk dark beige on light beige" low contrast scenario.

More like "when I walk into my office at night and turn on the computer monitor in a dark room"...kinda contrast.

Even with my new paper white, it doesn't have near the contrast "in the nice way" that my iPad mini has. And under regular room light, the iPad mini is easier to read on because of that -- IMHO.

Rather than blame "direct vs indirect light" - we are talking about "when your eyes pupils are dilated to see in very dim or no light --- and then you come across a very bright light". It hurts because you aren't supposed to have your pupils wide open when bright light appears.

Actually, I read in a pitch black room every night, with the light on at least 10. Any lower and I have to strain to read. I read until I fall asleep, and then if I wake up in the middle of the night, I read some more.

I mean, I can browse the web for 12+ hours straight on a LCD, so I can't see why I wouldn't be able to read a book on LCD.

But eInk is so much nicer to read on for something like a book.

Just lower the brightness and the strain on the eyes gets pretty much the same as with e-ink. It’s the intense brightness and blue light that hurt the eyes.

Nope. Did you read the whole thread? Of course people turn the brightness down and use the warm light filters when necessary. Nevertheless, some of us still cannot read long texts on LCD comfortably.

And I think there isn't a single reason. It's certainly not just about brightness or glare. My Laptop and desktop screens are both far better than the LCD tablet. I have very controlled room lighting in the Library. But you can't use them in bed or in an armchair.
Battery life can be an issue for LCD tablets. I might read for over 8 hours.
Larger tablets are heavy.
Emitted light needs adjustment as you move or lighting changes and I've never seen "automatic" that solves the issue. A passive screen with front light off and a reading light is most like paper. Reflective LCD only works in bright sunshine as panel light losses are too high.

I feel like eink does a better job of dithering around the edges. They're sharp while on an LCD the edges seem sort of grainy, regardless of how high the resolution.

Yes. I've read several books on my phone using Libby. It must be using dark mode though, and when I mean dark I mean white text on black, not some silly gray background. I still prefer e-ink though, and mostly use a Kobo Clara HD for reading.
