Well, scratch that.

I WAS going to go straight to bed.

Now, I'm going over to a neighbor's house for a late dinner and some wine.

Of course, my legs do not want me to go anywhere. They are steadfastly refusing to move.

Stupid legs.

The only cat we had to have euthanized was one with a stomach tumor. We kept going with him until he really seemed too miserable to keep going. He was vomiting blood, but that wasn't the reason we chose to end things-- it was the awful misery he was in while he was doing it. And the fact that he wasn't able to eat. If he'd been a human, I'd have tried to give him the option to make his own exit (not legal in many places, I know). We couldn't have that conversation, so I had to make the best decision for him that I could. I miss him still.

Yvan, I appreciate your point of view. I think our cats are very happy with us, but I know what you mean. Fortunately, though they occasionally miss the litterbox, mostly all we have to clean up around the place is barf. (One is a bit bulimic, and the other has hairballs.) I don't know what I would have done in your situation. My sister in law has a cat that urinates all over the house, and I don't think I'd be able to tolerate that. But confining the cat only to easy-to-clean areas would be hard, too, for the people and the cat.

Cats have to be tolerated, after all they allow us to share their space....

We've only ever had to euthanase one, and that was for a unitary blockage that the vet could not cure. After a fortune in expenses we dd have to make the decision - it was a great shame, 'cause even until the end he looked very healthy....

All the cats provide daily fun, despite urine in places, hairballs stood in the night and their habit of insisting in pooping in the bathtub......

But we would not do without any of them (though we sure do need a bigger bed!!!!)

I've had to euthanize several, but only when they were too sick to be saved and clearly suffering.

Poor Lyndon finally started having non-stop seizures (about 7 months after his radiation therapy for the tumor), and his blood sugar was spiking up to 800 and then falling to 50 ... so it was impossible to properly figure his insulin dosage.

Newton (who had Feline AIDS) got an ear infection that became necrotic. He couldn't walk or stand at the end. Winston had AIDS too ... although he was just dying of old age, but when they can't pee, poop or purr, and they stop eating or drinking ... that's when I think it's time.

I also had to euthanize on of my dearest little girls because her leukemia completely destroyed her ability to make red blood cells. She would have needed a transfusion every other few days to live ... and that would have meant exsanguinating a shelter cat ... that just seemed wrong.

It's never an easy choice, and I've cried my eyes out every time I've had to do it. However, I could never bring myself to do that because of a behavior problem.

Ricky, keep us up to date on your Federal Case & while you're talking to them see if we can't get euthanization for people in that bad a condition. I know I would rather die than suffer to that degree but that should be the individual's choice. Unfortunately humans can't be humane to humans, only to "dumb animals" as if we aren't pretty dumb ourselves.

My case won't really touch on that issue, although I absolutely support the right of a person with a terminal illness or in unbearable pain to be able to choose an early death as an option to continued suffering.

How-some-ever ... my case will be based on the fact that the ordinance, as written, is over broad, and attempts to regulate something over which the "state" has no authority.

For example .... the state (and by the "state", I mean the City of HSB) has the authority to prevent a house from becoming a "public health hazard." And, they have the authority to prevent animal abuse. However, I submit that they do not have the authority to enact an ordinance that assumes that any house (regardless of its size) is automatically a public heath hazard or a site of animal abuse, the instant the number of animals at that location is greater than four.

Further, I dispute their authority to demand that I submit myself and my property to warrantless police searches twice a year in order to retain my current animals.

I'm also hitting them on several other Constitutional issues .... not that any of the people in this area understand word one of the US Constitution. They are much too busy trying to force me to (1) participate in Christian prayers, and (2) pledge allegiance to the flags of both the United States and the State of Texas, at the so-called "public" town meetings ... to understand anything about basic civil rights.

Ooops .... I'm ranting again. Chocolate!! I neeeeeeed chocolate!!! Geoff?? Please shoot another eclair or two in my general direction!!!

A very similar law was passed here in Virginia several years back. I'd really appreciate a copy of well, basically everything.

I help one of the dog breed rescues in this area. I only have my 3 dogs (2 are rescues) at the moment, but I have gotten as high as 7. At some point I'd like to challenge that law.

I have two rescue dogs now. Some years ago I was in a more precarious situation than either of you because my wife did Home Child Care. We had to obey the DHR's regulation of no more than three pets or have her license revoked. We did get up to four for one weekend though, so don't tell anybody.

No problem. There are some cases that are currently winding their way through the Federal courts at present that are challenging these stupid laws in various parts of the country.

It really is insane to thing that any government should be allowed to micromanage every aspect of a citizen's life.

I can sort of see that it's a good idea to check to see if animals are being mistreated. Some people seem to have a gazillion animals crammed into filthy conditions, and that's not a good thing. But it's hard for me to imagine why any sane person looking at your situation would be worried about the animals, Ricky. (Worried about you, possibly. )

The thing that is really hysterical about all this, is that the lady who is my petsitter (she takes care of the gang whenever I am traveling for work) is the wife of the city manager of Marble Falls (the town nearest to HSB).

Now, she is very big on animal rights and animal welfare, and that is something very well known to the good ol' boys of HSB. Beyond that, my cat-crazy friends from the internet come to stay with me from time to time (I even had one friend decide to move here from Ohio after she brought me one of my kitties). So, it's not like I'm a completely whacked out hoarder. I think someone would have noticed by now.

Actually, I do have one cousin who is an animal hoarder ... she even made the national news (I saw the story on the AP feed ... and even without seeing her name in the story, I knew it was her. I called the police in New Mexico and asked if the person from whom all the sick and dying cats were confiscated was by any chance my cousin, and they confirmed that it was). However .... she has been diagnosed with OCD and schizophrenia paranoid type. She suffers from serious delusions, and is barely functional.

I'm just your average cat-crazy. Believe me ... I have no plans to slide into complete "barricaded herself into her house and started talking to the walls" madness. Or, if I do ... I'm finding good homes for all of my animals first.
