Want to Know How Free Other Countries Are? Get this FREE Pdf from the Cato Institute.
The Cato Institute, a co-publisher of this tome and whose website has the freebie, is a Washington, D.C.-based libertarian think tank.
The book appears not to be sold at Amazon in any format. It is available from the Cato Institute as a softcover, for $15.95 (plus shipping, I'm sure, and probably tax). The information in this ebook should be current, with it having been published just last August (2015). Title: The Human Freedom Index: A Global Measurement of Personal, Civil, and Economic Freedom. Format(s): Pdf. Author(s): Ian Vasquez; Tanja Porcnik. Publisher: Cato Institute. Pages: 108. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): Price: $0.00. Price for physical copy at Cato: $15.95+.(https://store.cato.org/book/human-freedom-index). Book Description (Cato Institute): The Human Freedom Index (HFI) is the most comprehensive measure of freedom ever created for a large number of countries around the globe. It captures the degree to which people are free to enjoy major liberties such as freedom of speech, religion, and association and assembly, as well as measures freedom of movement, women’s freedoms, crime and violence, and legal discrimination against same-sex relationships. The authors of the study—Ian Vásquez, Director of the Cato Institute’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, and Tanja Porčnik, a Cato Institute adjunct scholar and President of the Visio Institute based in Slovenia—also measure the rule of law, which they consider “an essential condition of freedom that protects the individual from coercion.” Vásquez says that “freedom is inherently valuable and plays a central role in human progress, so it is worth measuring carefully. Over time, the Human Freedom Index could track not only specific gains and losses of freedom but also explore the complex ways in which freedom influences, and can be influenced by, political regimes, economic development, and the whole range of indicators of human well-being." The index is co-published by the Cato Institute, the Fraser Institute in Canada, and the Liberales Institut at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Germany. Poignant Story of Man's Return to Boyhood Home in Zimbabwe. Has Outstanding Reviews.
And, of course, it's got a fantastic price ($1.99) or I wouldn't be posting it. That's only 18% of the digital list price.
The Last Resort: A Memoir of Zimbabwe. By Douglas Rogers. Rated 4.8 stars, from 204 reviews at Amazon at the present moment. Print list price $15.00; digital list price $11.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Crown, publisher. 322 pages. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002PXFYIS. Book Description Thrilling, heartbreaking, and, at times, absurdly funny, The Last Resort is a remarkable true story about one family in a country under siege and a testament to the love, perseverance, and resilience of the human spirit. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Douglas Rogers is the son of white farmers living through that country’s long and tense transition from postcolonial rule. He escaped the dull future mapped out for him by his parents for one of adventure and excitement in Europe and the United States. But when Zimbabwe’s president Robert Mugabe launched his violent program to reclaim white-owned land and Rogers’s parents were caught in the cross fire, everything changed. Lyn and Ros, the owners of Drifters–a famous game farm and backpacker lodge in the eastern mountains that was one of the most popular budget resorts in the country–found their home and resort under siege, their friends and neighbors expelled, and their lives in danger. But instead of leaving, as their son pleads with them to do, they haul out a shotgun and decide to stay. On returning to the country of his birth, Rogers finds his once orderly and progressive home transformed into something resembling a Marx Brothers romp crossed with Heart of Darkness: pot has supplanted maize in the fields; hookers have replaced college kids as guests; and soldiers, spies, and teenage diamond dealers guzzle beer at the bar. And yet, in spite of it all, Rogers’s parents–with the help of friends, farmworkers, lodge guests, and residents–among them black political dissidents and white refugee farmers–continue to hold on. But can they survive to the end? In the midst of a nation stuck between its stubborn past and an impatient future, Rogers soon begins to see his parents in a new light: unbowed, with passions and purpose renewed, even heroic. And, in the process, he learns that the "big story" he had relentlessly pursued his entire adult life as a roving journalist and travel writer was actually happening in his own backyard. Evoking elements of The Tender Bar and Absurdistan, The Last Resort is an inspiring, coming-of-age tale about home, love, hope, responsibility, and redemption. An edgy, roller-coaster adventure, it is also a deeply moving story about how to survive a corrupt Third World dictatorship with a little innovation, humor, bribery, and brothel management. --From the Hardcover edition. Beautiful, FREE Pdf Book about the Pequot Indians of New England.
I ran across this ebook a short time ago and felt that it was a must-post . . . . It is from the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center in Connecticut. The Pequot are a tribe of indigenous people (native Americans, American Indians) in New England.
The Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center, part of the government of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, is a non-profit educational institution that seeks to further knowledge and understanding of the richness and diversity of the indigenous cultures and societies of the United States and Canada. --from the Mission Statement (http://www.pequotmuseum.org/AboutTheMuseum.aspx). Elsewhere on its website, the museum notes that it is a "Smithsonian affiliate." To give you a good idea of the contents of the book, I'll give you the chapter titles: 1 - Creation and Other Stories 2 - Life Thousands of Years Ago 3 - A Look at the Museum's 16th Century Pequot Village 4 - European Arrival and the Aftermath 5 - The Pequot War (1636-1638) 6 - Life on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation: The 17th-19th c. Experience 7 - Pequot Life in the 20th and 21st Centuries 8 - The Natural World 9 - Mashantucket Pequot Tribal History Overview This is truly a delightful book. It is very well formatted. It has lots of colorful photographs, and maps and other images (they are a little small, but they enlarge very nicely with your browswer's zoom feature). I haven't read enough in it, yet, to vouch for the quality of writing, but everything leads me to believe that it, too, is excellent. Enjoy. Title: History and Culture eBook. Format(s): Pdf. Starting and Closing - John Smoltz and Don Yaeger - $1.99
http://www.amazon.com/Starting-Closi...dp/B0068M2HRI/ (In 1991 or 1992, Atlanta had an indoor soccer team called, I think, the Atlanta Attack. They hosted the league's All-Star Game, so I took a date. During the halftime intermission, there was a table with two young Braves players signing autographs. So I got the autographs dedicated to my niece. Their names were Glavin and Smoltz.) |

FREE Very Highly Rated Textbook on Economics, for Young People--in Pdf and/or EPub!
With this book being published by the Ludwig von Mises Institute, I would expect the book to take conservative, if not libertarian, views on topics where there are differences of opinion on the subject of economics.
Title: Lessons for the Young Economist (LvMI). Format(s): Pdf; ePub. Author(s): Robert P. Murphy. Publisher: Ludwig von Mises Institute. Pages: 414. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): 4.7 (26). Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: $2.99 (Kindle mobi ebook). Book Description (Amazon): Lessons for the Young Economist is easily the best introduction to economics for the young reader, covering both pure economic theory and also how markets work. Most of the attempts at such texts falter because they are either too dry and technical for younger readers or they are littered with attempts to keep the student entertained with references to pop culture or cheesy passages that attempt to "speak the child's language" but only end up sounding patronizing. Murphy's text has none of this. The prose has relentless fire without needless fireworks. What drives it forward is intellectual passion born of his own love of the topic. What's also nice is that he is nowhere self-consciously trying to sound like someone he is not. It is his real voice, explaining everything point by point. Here is the product of vast experience and daily writing. This permits the voicing of the book to achieve a remarkable integration page to page, chapter to chapter. Though he is drawing from the whole history of the development of economics, the text ends up being strikingly original. His approach is not based on anything but his own sense of how to teach this subject. This book will not be boring or useless even for people who think they already know the subject. Every page or two, there are fresh insights. For example, on the problems with barter, he shows that in the real world, most goods and services would not have come into existence at all (so that there would be no trading of tractors for cobbler services because there would be no tractors or repairable shoes). In another place, he points out that one of the advantages of the division of labor is that it makes the advantages of automation more readily apparent. Maybe these points appear in other introductory texts, but the way he works them into a logical and seamless system is very impressive. It has a much larger market than just high-school students. Anyone can enjoy this book and learn from it. Murphy wrote the first study guides to Human Action and to Man, Economy, and State. He can now add another medal to his chest. Comments: GoodReads offers this as a free download, giving the link below. So I believe this to be a legal free download. The Drunken Botanist: The Plants that Create the World's Great Drinks is a repeat Kindle sale title by Amy Stewart that looks pretty interesting. I have a friend who read it and liked it, and it has 4.6 stars out of 5 at Amazon. It periodically drops to $1.99 at Kindle US; this is one of those times

This Wonderful Pdf Book is about Sand Dunes. And It's FREE, from the NC Sea Grant!
Some of you people will be fortunate enough to visit the beach this season. Almost certainly, you'll see lots of pretty sand dunes. In addition to being aesthetically pleasing, sand dunes are an important part of the ecosystem. This little book tells about how sand dunes are created, how they are damaged, and even how to create man-made sand dunes.
Although this book mainly concerns the North Carolina coast, almost all of the information in it applies to other beaches along the East Coast (I notice that the Maine Sea Grant posts this ebook on their website) and Gulf Coast, especially. The book is also directed toward residents and developers on the coast. However, lots of the information in it can be used by visitors to the beach, to help them help protect these natural resources while they are visiting. The book is chock-full of beautiful color photographs and great diagrams. And it's just interesting reading! Title: The Dune Book. Format(s): Pdf. Author(s): Spencer Rogers; David Nash. Publisher: North Carolina Sea Grant. Pages: 28. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description (from the Introduction): Thirty years ago, sand dunes and dune vegetation often were considered nuisances to be flattened before starting coastal development. Fortunately, times have changed. Dune vegetation is now recognized as an important asset for providing protection from natural hazards and aesthetic benefits. Although property owners and communities are doing a much better job of protecting the dunes, the functions, benefits and limitations of dunes are often misunderstood. This booklet will describe what dunes and dune vegetation can and cannot do, cutting through some of the well-established myths. We will discuss how nature builds and destroys dunes and why they are so important. We will look at how we can manipulate the natural processes for the better and sometimes, if we are not careful, for the worse. The best dune grasses for the North Carolina coast are described and tips are given on how to plant and grow them. We also will discuss the best ways to use sand fences and other sand traps. We will give the reader a general view of the best dune management practices along developed shorelines. The booklet includes plant species, common development practices and regulations in North Carolina. The general management approaches will apply on any developed shoreline where people, buildings and roads are already in place. However, the practices are not intended to be applied to undeveloped shorelines where wildlife or natural area management is the primary goal. In areas where the dunes and dune vegetation interact with other inland grasses, trees and shrubs, different management approaches may be needed. Comments: Because of the fact that https://ncseagrant.ncsu.edu/coastwat...vancing-dunes/ states, concerning this book, that "copies are available as free downloads" and the URL below is from the same website. I believe this to be a legal free download. URL: https://ncseagrant.ncsu.edu/ncseagra.../dune_book.pdf (direct link). |

Pdf "Book" on Wildflowers Associated with Texas Legends and Folklore--FREE!
There are two booklets here. Neither one of them has enough pages to meet my definition of a "book," but I'll consider the two of them put together (26 pages) to squeeze by.
The "book" will not win any awards for formatting or lay out. But what it does have are some beautiful photographs of Texas wildflowers, botanical information about each wildflower, and, as you might expect, information about the legend or folklore that each wildflower is associated with. Titles: Wildflowers of Texas: Legends and Folklore (Parts I & II). Format(s): Pdf. Author(s): Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Publisher: Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Pages: 26 total. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description (by me): Book from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas giving botanical information about various wildflowers associated with legends and folklore in Texas. There are color photographs accompanying the text. The last part of each profile tells about the legend or folklore that the wildflower is associated with. Comments: I believe that these are legal free downloads due to the fact that they were posted on the nonprofit Lady Bird Society's Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center's website, and that the book(s) are not sold in their online store (http://www.wildflower.org/shop/produ...catagory=Books) either in digital or physical forms. URLs: Part I: https://www.wildflower.org/docs_yout...20Folklore.pdf; Part II: http://www.wildflower.org/teachers/l...kore_part2.pdf. Last edited by GtrsRGr8; 04-04-2016 at 11:54 PM. |

FREE Pdf Art Catalog of Andy Warhol Polaroids and Portraits.
There's more to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania than the national park there with the battlefield. For one thing, there is a fine college there called . . . are you ready for this . . . Gettysburg College. At Gettysburg College, there is a fine art museum, the Schmucker Art Gallery. The Gallery publishes several art catalogs of items in their collection. The following is one of those catalogs.
I considered and decided against posting this book two or three times. Why? It is just so short--only about 20 pages, and that might be stretching it a little bit. But, the type is small, as are the photos, so a lot gets packed within those pages. And, I felt that it was just too interesting of a book to pass on it. See if you agree. Oh, yeah, it's free. Title: Andy Warhol: Polaroids & Portraits. Format(s): Pdf. Author(s): Emily A. Francisco; Shannon Egan (editor). Publisher: Schmucker Art Gallery, Gettysburg College. Pages: c. 20. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description (excerpt from the book): Enigmatic Andy Warhol claimed he had “no re al point to make” in producing art. Yet, his silkscreens, sculptures, paintings, and photographs reveal the artist’s profound interest in the way art intersected with fields like advertising, fashion, film, mass culture, and underground music. In his experimentations with photography and portraiture, Warhol was fascinated with representations of both the individual and masses and used the Polaroid portrait to illustrate the fine lines between art and popular culture, celebrity and anonymity. Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download because the book is posted on a publicly accessible webpage of Gettysburg College and there is at least one link to the webpage on a publicly accessible webpage. The collection that this book falls in is part of the Digital Commons section (called "The Cupola") of Gettysburg College's website, and is part of the Digital Commons Network (http://network.bepress.com).
