I wasn't aware that a tap would even affect the light level. If I tap against the left bezel, I get a page backwards. I have to slide my finger vertically along the bezel to trigger the light level adjustment.

Yes, that's what I assumed would be the case, which is why I kept saying things that happened "for me". I've long wondered if there was something a bit faulty about my specific device, which I've raised here and got no reply to — which means either it really is just my unit and what I'm talking about makes no sense to anyone else; or I really am a pain in the arse without intending it and don't known how not to be and that's why my posts get ignored; or I keep typing in invisible ink. Any of the three, it's frustrating.

But definitely, my light is resetting to 2% with a single tap. I'm not sliding my finger at all.

Other things I've noticed: if my device is in sleep mode and I pick it up by the right-hand side of the frame, without putting my hand near the slider switch or onto the screen, the device wakes up and starts turning pages; and if I hold it single-handedly by the right bezel while reading, and then a shift in my hand changes where pressure is placed on the frame, again not touching or moving over the screen, then the device will set a bookmark in the currently-open book, often multiple times on a single page. I wonder if the innards are seated properly inside the frame. Or is the frame really that insubstantial? (It'd help to know if others have experienced this — is it something to do with the build or the design of the device in general? — but I have no idea.)

I've referred this to customer service a couple of times, and their replies have been politely-phrased variations of "what you're saying makes no sense to us and we're going to do nothing about it". So maybe I'm thinking in invisible ink as well.

That's definitely not normal behavior.

From what I have seen, I agree with customer service: it makes no sense. it sounds like something is out of place. Have you ever pulled it apart? Or dropped it? Either could have caused this. If it was in my hands, I would pull it open, check the connections and that everything was seated correctly.

If by "it makes no sense" you mean it shouldn't be behaving that way, then I agree. If you're trying to suggest I don't know what I'm seeing, then really, that's not very helpful.

No, I haven't dropped it, and it hasn't been in a bag or the like where it could get rough treatment. There are no scratches, dents, cracks or bends. I would have said so if there were. And I haven't cracked it open because it's still under warranty, and I don't want to blow that if there's any hope of getting it sorted.

I went into details in the hope that I could prompt some feedback as to whether others were seeing any of this behaviour.

That's definitely not normal behaviour. I'd be tempted to open it up and check that everything is properly seated. From the sounds of it, your IR sender/receiver pairs are not working properly. If there's no visible bits of grunge under the edge of the bezel, again looks as if the innards are misaligned.

Sadly, that sounds pretty much like Kobo's customer service and most other's for that matter. If it isn't in our scripts, it can't be happening.

David

Sorry, I did mean the "it shouldn't be behaving that way". Your description of the behaviour was far to clear to think you were misreporting it.

The closest thing I have seen to this was my sons Glo. I picked it up to see if it had updated the firmware. When I tapped the top right corner, the menu would open but close immediately. After a few frustrated minutes tapping at various parts of the screen and discovering it was only the top part of the screen that was having problems, I saw there was something stuck under the top left corner of the bezel. When I pulled that out, everything was OK.

A lot of dirt under the bezel blocking some of the IR sensors would explain some of what you are seeing. But, it wouldn't explain the device waking when you pick it up by the frame. An out of position switch could do that. Or something affecting the sleep cover sensor.

If this has been happening since you got it, you should get it replaced. And don't forget that it is the shop you bought it from that is responsible for the replacement, not Kobo. For some reason I think you bought it from JB HiFi and they are usually good for exchanges.

Thanks David. Thanks all who have given me feedback.

I felt my first step was to at least hear whether others had experienced anything similar — devices being what they are, it's not always easy to tell what level of "quirks" is to be expected (and, I guess, put up with). $220 is not a cheap device by my standards, but I guess to other people it might seem that it is, and maybe I shouldn't set my expectations too high.

Anyway. Given today's feedback, I contacted Kobo again — on the number for the local Kobo distributor, so was stonkered to get a call back *from Canada* !! (I guess I have Skype and the like to thank for that?) The device is still under warranty, so I didn't want to blow that option while it's still available. The rep was actually really responsive and on-the-ball — insisted we do a factory reset as a first step, but I guess that's part of the script — and now it's up for escalated attention. I don't mind that, if it gets fixed or replaced ... and if at least it means no-one's going to come back and say, "you opened it, you broke it!"

(Oh, and in registering the device after the reformat it installed 3.8.0 via the desktop, so I guess the firmware release has made it to Oz.)

I agree, $220 is not a cheap device. I don't think your expectations are set to high. It should work better than you are seeing.

That sounds a little better of a response from them. Hopefully they sort it out.

I noticed that my son's Glo and the other Touch were on 3.8.0 on the weekend. It must have hit them some time last week.

Oh bugger. Spoke too soon.

Just got an e.mail from Kobo customer service, to say, "Congratulations on reformatting your device. Since the issue has now been resolved, the incident has been closed. Thank you for contacting Kobo Customer Care."

Bloody hell. Don't they even read their own incidents?!!

Anyway. Since the issue no longer appears to be related to the firmware, I'll stop posting in this thread.

Wish me luck!! :-(

Sorry if I missed this, but did you buy it at a bricks & mortar store? I'd be taking it back for an exchange if so.

My Sony T1 would do weird mutiple page turns depending on how it was held. Took it out of the cover with rigid back and tight leather covered elastic corner retainers. Page turns were back to normal. T1 has tapered back at top like Kobo H2O and rounded back side edges. I think the reader was pulled out of alignment by corner e-reader retainers. I was lucky screen wasn't permanently damaged. This was a Belkin book style cover made for Kobo Touch. Only use cover that fits correctly.

Maybe this is what happens to me too, maybe i was searching it in the wrong direction, that when I put it in sleep modus i maybe hit the screen and it turns into 2% but just touch the screen ? I can't reproduce it now offcourse when I want to try this it stays at 30% but we have the 2% in common.. why always 2 % ?? it makes no sence..this morning I took my glo that was sleeping for 3 days (used my Aura HD a lot) and again, the light dropped to 2 % !
Maybe someone can make a patch so you can choose to disable the light slider ? If possible offcourse..

About the ir-receiver/transmitter, I used my Aura on Greece, and I was sitting on the beach with the light on, mosquito's coming to the light and they make reading a lot more uncomfortable, when they fly to the screen they made my page turns.. On my GF Sony, she was reading a bit during breakfast,a tiny breadcrum made her device go bezerk !

That would be great. I don't like it either, and the 'jumps inexplicably to 2%' has bitten me a few times as well.

Both have happened to me too :-). I actually prefer physical page turn buttons, I find. But they are going the way of the dodo...
