No, I'm talking about Tab 7.7, a Super AMOLED Plus, 1280x800, 7.7" screen and 10-hour battery life tablet that was announced a while back, and Samsung has mentioned nothing since.

I believe the tablet that is supposed to be released on the 19th is the ASUS Transformer Prime, a 10.1" quad-core beast.

To be honest, I was thinking about picking one up to try, but I noticed that the display model had a lot of scratches. I understand that it doesn't have Gorilla Glass, so I was just wondering how does it hold up during normal use, not being abused by shoppers.
No scratches here. I've had it since release. But, I keep it in a cover when transporting it. I use it naked in the house because of the form factor. More comfortable than using it in the cover. I knew it wasn't Gorilla Glass when I purchased it. My primary concern was being able to hold it comfortably in portrait and landscape for long periods of time. It's actually more comfortable to hold than the Fire and it's lighter.

Not likely. It would require additional/changed hardware I believe.

First - I've owned a first, second third and now the latest Touch Kindles. I LOVE my Kindle and read over 100 books a year, some for pleasure and some for my job. I really, really wanted to like the Fire I bought this last week. But after two days of giving it a full shake down, I returned it yesterday. Two main complaints:

1. The responsiveness of the touch screen was not what I was hoping for/expecting. Scrolling was a little laggy. Sometimes "buttons" took repeated touches before anything happened. (Surprisingly, my Kindle Touch seems to work better.) The whole user interface was not as user friendly as I would like. For example - removing a book from the device when I was done reading it does not remove it from the favorites, that took a second action.

2. The device never fully disappeared for me during reading like my e-ink readers do. Maybe it is the backlit screen, or the weight, or a combination of the two. It just never felt as comfortable in my hand and never "went away" as I read. I was always conscious of the fact that I was reading on it.

Between the two, the second was the deal breaker. I have some hope that software updates will fix the first. But I remember the joy of reading on my first Kindle, how after a few minutes I was buried in the story and forgot all about the device, and that never happened for me.

Someone ought to tell Amazon that, they seem happy to sell it as a general purpose tablet, not as a reading device.

Their headline list of features has reading way down the list:
Movies, apps, games, music, reading and more, plus Amazon's revolutionary, cloud-accelerated web browser
- 18 million movies, TV shows, songs, magazines, and books
- Thousands of popular apps and games, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Pandora, and more
- Ultra-fast web browsing - Amazon Silk
- Free cloud storage for all your Amazon content
- Vibrant color touchscreen with extra-wide viewing angle - same as an iPad
- Fast, powerful dual-core processor
- Favorite children's books, graphic novels, and magazines in rich color

And the review quotes they have highlighted include:

Quote:
"The Kindle Fire is a 7-inch tablet that links seamlessly with Amazon's impressive collection of digital music, video, magazine, and book services in one easy-to-use package. It boasts a great Web browser, and its curated Android app store includes most of the big must-have apps (such as Netflix, Pandora, and Hulu). The Fire has an ultra-affordable price tag, and the screen quality is exceptional for the price." - CNET
Quote:
"The Fire gives me the features I want at a price point that's less than half of the iPad 2. I can check my email, browse the Internet, maybe play a few games, most importantly, I can read magazines in color on a Kindle." - Gizmodo
Quote:
"Amazon’s Kindle Fire is likely to be the first successful tablet not sold by Apple, and there are several good reasons for it: the low price of $199, the convenient, portable size of 7 inches, and a rich catalog of books, movies and music offered through Amazon’s Web-based services." - Ars Technica
They are quite deliberately positioning it as a competitor to the iPad.

It competes with the iPad in the same way a Ford Escort competes with a Toyota Camry. Both are capable devices with the same goals and objectives. Engines and appointments affect price and appeal.

Right and it's up to the buyer to know their needs.

It seems clear to me that they cut out all the hardware and options that they could in order to lower the price as much as possible but retain the functionality needed to consume Amazon media.
