otterbox for k3

Last week I received the new Otterbox for K3 and wanted to give a quick description.

The Otterbox cover for K3 works like all of the other Commuter cases made by Otterbox for other devices. It's 3 layers including: screen cover, silicone wrap, and a hard plastic shell.

The hard plastic shell covers only the sides of the device, the top and bottom are not covered.

The silicone wrap cover everything except the screen and the on / off slider ... even the buttons on the front. When I first added the silicone cover I wasn't impressed with how the D-pad worked under the cover. But the more I used it the better it seemed to seat onto the buttons. After just a few minutes the D-pad and all of the notes buttons worked great.

The page forward and page back buttons were a bit less responsive but after some use I got used to how to press them to get them to respond. I think those could probably fit better.

The screen cover was the most disappointing feature of the 3 layers. While I didn't put this on the Kindle directly, I did lay it over the screen to see how it would work before I actually applied it to the screen. The screen protector was so reflective I could see myself in it. I don't want to see my ugly mug while reading an ebook. There reflective surface also added a lot of glare to the screen, distracting from the experience of the e-ink pearl screen.

If the screen protector would have been anti-glare I would have kept the cover, but in the end I sent it back and decided to try something else.

I know, I know. Again with this? Im not sure how to post photos so I just linked to it. I just got it in the mail and where Im not 100% satisfied I do like it alot. What are my problems with it?

It has straps for all four sides but for some reason they arent very secure. They hold the Kindle with no problem but if you intend to plug it in to charge or even turn it on or off it slides right out of the straps. And the worst part is its a real pain to get the Kindle back under them. This can be both a Pro and Con depending on who you ask. For me its very annoying.

As the reviews say there are slots for a pen, credit cards and even an ID if need be. I ask you, who would store their credit cards and ID with their Kindle? I know I wouldnt.

I know its far fetched but I was hoping that since its supposedly so heavy it would have space to put the charger and cord in. No, it does not. It doesnt seem so heavy either but I have yet to really sit down and read a book on it. Ill have to post a better review once I attempt that.

Maybe I got the wrong case but the reviews state that it is firm. Not really. I wouldnt go stacking a bunch of things on top of it. It isnt firm at all honestly.

Now for the Pros? Well Im happy to finally have my Kindle in a case but I dont think that counts. It has two zippers and zips shut. I flipped it over and shook it, it holds the Kindle securely.

Overall I dont think it was that bad for what I paid and the shipping was really quick. It shipped out in the middle of the week and I got it just about a day or two later. That was a pleasant surprise. The thing is will I keep this and just grab a skin or will I save up for an Oberon? Tough decision. This isnt that bad after all and didnt cost a ton of money so for the time being I think Ill settle with this and try to find some sort of skin.

most of the covers that are using the corner straps are pretty similar except one corner (typically the upper right) is elastic of some sort to allow for ease of putting the cover on and off. I have actually put my ID and credit card in the cover. sometimes going into a restaurant and I don't need anything else, while flying, and maybe even a store where I anticipant any sort of delay. anything that would be big enough to handle any of the cords would be more along the lines of a sleeve than a cover I think. I'm not sure about the K3, but it is very easy to charge the K2 when it is in the cover.

I've tried three covers so far, and I'm waiting for a fourth. I tried the Amazon cover (works OK, pretty good quality), the ACase cover (has a reading-stand feature that works OK, but uses corner straps, and the elastic is going downhill), the M-Edge (ill-fitting wraparound leather, mediocre quality).

My new-to-the-market Speck cover by Target has been shipped. The reading stand "leg" is inside the cover when closed, and it supports the Kindle in either portrait or landscape orientation. It uses a plastic clip to hold the K in place.

i have auditioned several K3 covers. i find it impossible to tell what will work and what won't just by reading descriptions. i like the "reporter" style that flips back on itself over the "portfolio" style that opens like a regular book.

none of the covers i saw were perfect. here are the contenders:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product

this mivizu cover is very minimalist, which is both good and bad. it holds the top of the K3 by a plastic "tray" leaving the page turn buttons and keyboard unexposed and very easily accessible. it also holds the K3 upright at various angles for hands free reading. the M-edge light (great little light, btw) won't work with it.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product

since this is an M-edge cover it obviously works well with the M-edge light. it is the largest of the covers, and seems a little cheap as the exterior material is vinyl and fabric as opposed to leather. the K3 attaches to loops at the corners, so the buttons and keyboard are very accessible. this cover can hold the K3 upright for hands free reading, but there is only one steep angle because you have to use the clasp to attach the front to the back to keep it open. this angle is not very stable.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product

this acase stays open at different angles similar to the mivizu. the leather is nice and it is a very well padded cover which makes it on the large and heavy side. the elastic strap seems a little cheap. the K3 is held at the corners so all controls are accessible. the M-edge light works well with this cover. it was my 2nd favorite.

the one i kept is

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...ef=oss_product

this marware has the classiest look and is a good compromise between protection and svelteness. the M-edge light works well with it. i don't think that this would reliably hold the K3 up on a table or similar by itself, but for holding it up on my chest when i read in bed (90% of my reading) it is great. the one knock on this case is that it comes very close to the control pad and partially blocks the right most clicker. i have not found this to be an issue in use as my fingernail works and i don't use that clicker much. i also end up using my fingernail on the on-off switch as it is close to the cover, but not a big deal to me. the page turn buttons are fully exposed.

Yes, the MEdge Executive jacket: http://app.medgestore.com/products/k...-executive.psp

Thanks for this tip, sleepy. Best Buy, justifying my trust in their return policy, just let me bring in my receipt for my two-week-old K3, and rang me up with the free cover. Yea! They were out of most colors so I got purple.

Now, as I have no need for a purple MEdge executive jacket, I'm going to sell it, and recoup the sales tax I paid to get my K3 locally.
They have a buy and sell section for accessories, here, right?
