Those with the ability to spell are particularly welcome.
![]() ================================================== ================ Back to the news. Actually its old news, but it fits. The 2012 Apocalypse "For scary speculation about the end of civilization in 2012, people usually turn to followers of cryptic Mayan prophecy, not scientists. But that’s exactly what a group of NASA-assembled researchers described in a chilling report issued earlier this year on the destructive potential of solar storms." "Entitled "Severe Space Weather Events — Understanding Societal and Economic Impacts," it describes the consequences of solar flares unleashing waves of energy that could disrupt Earth’s magnetic field, overwhelming high-voltage transformers with vast electrical currents and short-circuiting energy grids. Such a catastrophe would cost the United States "$1 trillion to $2 trillion in the first year," concluded the panel, and "full recovery could take 4 to 10 years." That would, of course, be just a fraction of global damages. Good-bye, civilization." And now for the bad news. Will A Massive Solar Flare Destroy the Earth? "The peak of the solar maximum will not occur until at least 2013, and such massive solar storms do not typically occur until shortly after the peak of surface activity. Thirdly, and more to the point, such a solar flare would not destroy the Earth. At least not directly." "When I said "at least not directly" I was being a bit coy. The reason is, you see, is that the impact to our electrical grid could be devastating and it could take months to repair. That means possibly no electricity for months. I’ll let you ponder the consequences for that for a moment. But don’t worry, the government is aware of this and they are putting safeguards in place to prevent such a cataclysm. We should be find." Lets be very clear about the last part. That is just speculation. They could be wrong. Now is not the time to have doubts, send me your money TODAY. We don't have a moment to lose. FREE foil hats to the first 100 callers. Protect yourself and loved ones. Reserve a sod house now. Royal Acres is an equal opportunity kingdom. |

I'm one step ahead of the game then -- I've already got mine. It matches my Snuggie.
That could be an advantage I'm thinking. The sod house doesn't sound very shower-friendly, at least not without turning into mud house. |

The modern sod house has a hatch that you can open in the rain. Allowing you, and everyone else who wants one, to have a real shower. It could even be entertaining.
![]() Then too you have the nice peace and quiet that only 3 to 4 feet of sod can give. An if I can get enough workers subjects people to help, we could even have wood floors in my house. Gravel floors in the rest, of course. Yes, I have lots of improvements planned. So hurry on down to Royal Acres where everything is play, play, play. After the work is done, that is. ![]() Royal Acres is an equal opportunity kingdom. |

Has anyone actually started to put together an emergency kit?
It really can be easy and cheap. Or you can go the full route with first aid training, 6 to 12 month food supply, weapons and ammo stash, and a hideout. |

One of the evaps went down. They convert salt water to fresh water. Some of that is used for the boilers that power the steam plant. The damage to the evap was such it required a shipyard to fix. It was decided we could wait until the ship got back to the US. So, for the last 2 months of that trip, we were on water hours. No water fountains except during meals. Coffee only outside meals. One day we ran into a rain squall. This was before women could be stationed on combat ships. A bunch of the guys ran up on deck and soaped up. The rain went off one way, we went another. The Executiv Officer, second in command, tried and finally convinced the Captain, number one in charge, to let those guys wash the soap off. I didn't join the soap up because I figured that would happen. Whoosh, an odor I'll never forget. 300 unbathed guys. |

So your job is to help the news crews that are standing by the ocean saying "This is the worst hurricane in history and every with any common sense has left town."

I'm living in New Mexico now, and the last big snowstorm we had was four years ago (my freshman year in college!), and even then it wasn't as bad as the snowstorms we used to get in Minnesota or even Maryland (we lived near the mountains). I'm a little worried about my relatives that still live in MN/MD, because they've been getting big storms the past few years, but I'm assuming they're smart enough to prep for anything bad that might happen.
At least, I HOPE they are! D: Maybe I should call and ask them... |

I live in Fl. We always have the threat of hurricanes, but we have come away unscathed so far this year. I do have some stuff stocked up though.

Hmm. Depending on where you live along the Gulf of Mexico coast, power outages can last from, several days to weeks, due to hurricane damage.
