Weekly Report:

Read:
  • Target on Her Back (The Precinct #39) by Julie Miller (B/4 stars)
  • Shaken (Deep Ops #2.5) by Rebecca Zanetti (B/4 stars)
  • Alpha Night (Psy/Changeling Trinity #4) by Nalini Singh (A/5 stars) (ARC)
Yay, I finally read some new-to-me stuff this week!

I had planned to read more of Silver Silence in my complete Psy/Changeling series reread when I was surprisingly approved for the ARC. I still plan to get back to it and reread the rest of "season two," but right now I am rereading Alpha Night more slowly. So many new questions.

Allegiance of Honor, in Nalini Singh's Psy-Changeling series, has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. As much as folks in this forum talk about and like this series, everyone probably already has it, but if not...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0177AGOCS
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/allegiance-of-honor

Spoiler:
Quote:
The "unparalleled romantic adventure"* of Nalini Singh's New York Times bestselling series continues as a new dawn begins for the Psy-Changeling world...

A staggering transformation has put the Psy, humans, and changelings at a crossroads. The Trinity Accord promises a new era of cooperation between disparate races and groups. It is a beacon of hope held together by many hands: old enemies, new allies, wary loners.

But a century of distrust and suspicion can't be so easily forgotten, and it threatens to shatter Trinity from within at any moment. As rival members vie for dominance, chaos and evil gather in the shadows and a kidnapped woman's cry for help washes up in San Francisco, while the Consortium turns its murderous gaze toward a child who is the embodiment of change, of love, of piercing hope: a child who is both Psy...and changeling.

To find the lost and protect the vulnerable - and to save Trinity - no one can stand alone. This is a time of loyalty across divisions, of bonds woven into the heart and the soul, of heroes known and unknown standing back to back and holding the line. But is an allegiance of honor even possible with traitors lurking in their midst?

PERFECT! I just finished the book prior to this one, Shards of Hope, and was debating how long I should wait before I got this and read it. (Am currently in the middle of Wild Invitation, one of the short story collections).

All the Psy-Changeling books are in Audible Escape. I am on book 6. Does anyone else listen to these? Just wondering if I might like them better if I read them. The last one was good, but not great....

I tried one a few years back in audio, but the way she did the characters' voices didn't sound the way they do in my head so I had to stop. That happened to me listening to the In Death books after reading them for so as well. Plus some of the words the narrator chose to emphasize in certain sentences were odd choices to me. I am just not an audio person for books.

I'd say it's going to depend on what it is you don't like about what you've listened to so far.

Angela Dawe is pretty awful, especially in the earlier books. Her dialog is okay (if the voices don't bother you like they do Library Addict ), but her exposition...gak. I've tried to explain it to people - it's almost as of she's got a metronome ticking away and every other beat she puts a stress on the word. Bad duh duh DUH duh ba DUH bad duh DUH. I really don't understand it because she doesn't do it that way in the dialog.

She does slowly improve, mostly. But even when she gets better, it's uneven. I mostly loved the book Shards of Hope, but I *hate* to listen to it. The sound level between the *whispered* dialog and the non-dialog is too jarring. If I play it loud enough to hear the whispers, it just about breaks my eardrums when she switches to the non-dialog parts.

I have them all, I have to admit, and I think she's generally good enough in the later books. I'm a big re-reader (re-listener) - but I usually can't go back any further than Bonds of Justice. And then I skip the next three because they (and Mine to Possess) are my least favorites in the entire series. I tend to prefer the books that include a Psy as part of the couple - the "dominant changeling male" rhetoric makes me kind of crazy.

I meant to also say, if what you don't like is the hyperbole Singh uses, that never changes. No one's sad - they're devastated. No one's annoyed, they're enraged. And the torture sessions most of the Psy go through as children - horrible.

I sometimes roll my eyes when I read or listen to her books, but I can't stop reading them. I enjoy her characters and her world building more than the hyperbole annoys me.

Thanks, I am going to switch to the book and take the audios out of my AE lists. Based on your comments and my feelings, I think I will like the books much better.

Robin Owens HeartMate series is in AE, too, and I just couldn't listen to them. That is one of my all time favorite romance series! But the male narrator was all wrong for me.

When I started the series, I figured out pretty quickly that I needed to take at least a month or two break in between books, otherwise they would have driven me crazy. It's taken me almost 2 years to get through the series, but because I took those breaks, I can honestly say that I've enjoyed every single book (some more than others, of course ).

If you didn't pick up the omnibus of the first three titles in the Escape to New Zealand series by Rosalind James when it was free a while back, now here's the second title for free at both Kindle and Kobo US. I've read and really enjoyed most (maybe even all) of the titles in this series.

Just Good Friends, #2

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Just-Good-F...dp/B00948KF7C/
Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Just-Good-Fri...dp/B00948KF7C/

Spoiler:
Quote:
Some bets were made to be lost

Kate Lamonica isn’t Koti James’s type. Too small. Too dark. And heaps too much work. So it’s an easy bet that he can be her friend for six weeks without making a move on her, no matter what his mates would have said.

Kate can’t believe she’s made the bet at all. New Zealand had seemed like the perfect escape from the stalker who’s threatened first her peace of mind, and then her life. She doesn’t need any more trouble, so why has she agreed to spend time with a Maori rugby player who’s far too handsome and charming for his own good—and knows it?

There's more than one game Koti’s good at playing ...

Note: This STAND-ALONE romance, like New Zealand, contains some steam. If that isn't your cuppa, maybe visit another country ... err, book.

Read:
  • Close Up (Burning Cove #4) by Amanda Quick (A-/5 stars) (ARC)
Still on Silver Silence in my complete Psy/Changeling series reread as I didn't have much reading time this past week and spent most of it rereading Alpha Night. Putting the series reread on hold for now as I want to reread or at least skim Amanda Bouchet's Nightchaser. I just don't remember much about it and book 2 comes out Tuesday.

Purchased:
I actually bought the box set, but like the individual covers.

I just started reading the Psy/Changeling series, after having book 1 on my Kindle for years! It's fantastic!
I was wondering if anyone can point me to the tools I need to remove the DRM from my recent Kobo purchases so I can convert them from epub to mobi format in Calibre. I downloaded the most recent version of the Dedrm tools from apprentice alf but they don't seem to work.

A few questions to ask. Did you download the ebooks using Kobo's desktop application or did you download them from your Kobo library using the '...' menu? To get the books from the Kobo desktop application, search for information on obok. For the library download, some would be without DRM and end in your downloads folder, the rest would need to have ADE installed to download the epub. Those should be handled by the stock deDRM plugin.

BTW, obok is in the same zip file in which the stock deDRM application is packaged.

However, discussions about removing DRM are frowned upon on MobileRead and I think I've pushed that line as far as I can.
