I'm assuming just the fact that they were included.

Presumably they were there so that people could look at the books discussed and make up their own mind.

Spoiler:
Although I did recognize Nathan Fillion on the cover I don't watch Castle and didn't realize when starting this that these are written as tie-ins for the show and pretend to be by the character from the Castle TV show. Maybe this would be more amusing/interesting if I was interested in the show. I seriously doubt I will continue after this first installment and probably wouldn't finish this one if it wasn't so short.

First thoughts are that it could be and interesting storyline but the cliches and horrible names are a huge distraction. Some examples of the bad names/cliches: the lead FBI agent is "April Showers", the fiance of one guy is "Samantha Toppers" and is described multiple times as "top-heavy", Derrick Storm is trying to get April into bed before even meeting her, etc.
Ya, I wish I had looked into the author a little more before starting that (stupid me for seeing Nathon Fillion's picture and not digging deeper). It wasn't terrible but ... well, see the spoiler I quoted. If you enjoy the show these could be interesting but I am going to skip these.

Next up: Hour Game by David Baldacci, maybe this will be a better fit.

Based on recommendations here and the content of the book itself, I have abandoned Piers Anthony at 30% read. Moving quickly into A Better World by Marcus Sakey.

I am eyeballing two StoryBundles and a Humble Bundle... my nontracked book budget is going to explode.

It was a wry observation that after criticizing the books for their content, there were ads leading you to Amazon to buy the books. I view ads as "promotions", so I just thought it was a weird thing to find at the end of the article.

Just in the middle of a re-read the latest Foreigner book from CJ Cherryh, only to discover that she was FINALLY named an SFWA Grand Master. Well deserved. And telling that two of my favourite authors just devoted their own blogs to celebrate her works and the award.

And, my schedule is still too unpredictable to start a "proper" book, so I'm still reading shorter pieces when and where I can. Two of the ones I've read so far deserve special mention -- A Girl in Every Universe, by Terry McGarry, and Scream If You Wanna Go Faster, by Wade Beauchamp.

A Girl in Every Universe was a fast paced and very funny short story of alternate universes, plots and evil twins. It was an old Fictionwise purchase and, unfortunately, it does not appear to be available in ebook form from anyone else.

Scream If You Wanna Go Faster was the story of a 1963½ Ford Galaxie 500 XL as it passes down through various owners, misadventures and restorations over the next 100 years. Not an entirely original concept, but well done. I did especially enjoy the segment that covers the last adventure in the Ford's "life", several decades from now. (As befitting a story about a early 60s road yacht with a big back seat, several of the segments are very "adult" in nature.)

And now, back to some selected shorts.

Like the sound of that, added to my TBR. I see it's a novel or novella (210 pages), so more than a short story, I would suggest .

Next up, I think I'll try The Wiz Biz after what I've been hearing here.
Finished the first book of The Wiz Biz, Wizard's Bane. I'm sure I must have read this back in the day, since some of it feels eerily familiar, but if so, I remembered very little except that basic premise. Yes, some of the computer stuff is a bit dated, but really, at that lowest level, it's remarkably similar. I definitely enjoyed this, and will continue with book 2 soonish.

Meanwhile, re-reading Mirror Dance, a collection of 3 shorter works in the Vorkosigan Saga. And enjoying it.

Just finished Make Me by Lee Child. Better than his previous Reacher novel but not as good as the original ones. I'd give it three out of five stars.

As did I. A most enjoyable book, although with the ESP and other things edging more towards fantasy than SF, but definitely SF in style. It's an omnibus of a couple of shorter stories and one much longer story in three sections.

Next up:
Deryni Tales by Katherine Kurtz - bought in paper as there's no ebook anywhere

and

Dragonheart by Todd McCaffrey - it's time I see what he's done with Pern.

Sadly, he's not the writer his mother was. I still read them, when I can get them at the library, but IMHO they aren't really up to what one might hope. There are also, I'm told, a bunch of inconsistencies with the existing oeuvre. I don't remember enough of it to recognize them, so can't really comment.
