I love this thread! The most recent notable quote I have read in a book goes like this

I might like to have someone courting me. But it would have to be someone who is a square shooter and who has a train load of courage. And it would have to be someone who doesn't have to talk down to folks to feel good, or to tell a person they are worthless if they just made a mistake. And he'd have to be not too thin. Why, I remember hugging [my brother] Ernest was like wrapping your arms around a fence post, and I love Ernest, but I want a man who can hold me down in a wind. Maybe he'd have to be pretty stubborn. I don't have any use for a man that isn't stubborn. Likely a stubborn fellow will stay with you through thick and thin, and a spineless one will take off, or let his heart wander.

.— Nancy E. Turner, These Is My Words

David Kalstone invited me to join him one summer in Venice- … David paid the rent and financed the major treats, such as dinner once a season at Harry’s Bar, and a day beside the Cipriani pool once every week or two. At the pool everyone was so old that Gore Vidal reputedly referred to it as Lourdes. It was there that Marguerite Littman …said to Tennessee Williams as they looked at a cadaverous girl shambling past in her bikini, “Look, anorexia nervosa!” To which Williams replied, “Oh Marguerite, you know everyone.

"The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - that you'd thought special, particular to you. And here it is, set down by someone else, a person you've never met, maybe even someone long dead. And it's as if a hand has come out, and taken yours."
― Alan Bennett, The History Boys

“There is something miraculous in the way the years wash away your evidence, first you, then your friends and family, then the descendants who remember your face, until you aren’t even a memory, you’re only carbon, no greater than your atoms, and time will divide them as well.”

"We love ourselves to the point of idolatry; but we also intensely dislike ourselves — we find ourselves unutterably boring. Correlated with this distaste for the idolatrously worshipped self, there is in all of us a desire, sometimes latent, sometimes conscious and passionately expressed, to escape from the prison of our individuality, an urge to self-transcendence. It is to this urge that we owe mystical theology, spiritual exercises and yoga — to this, too, that we owe alcoholism and drug addiction."

~Aldous Huxley

.....People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.
..........— Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955), theoretical physicist. From a March 1955 letter of consolation to the family of Michele Besso after his friend's death. Quoted in Science and the Search for God (1979) by Freeman Dyson and elsewhere.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually, from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly... timey-wimey... stuff."

"It's the cold fish dying in your stomach feeling. You try to forget about it, but as soon as you do, the fish starts flopping around under your heart and reminds you that something truly horrible is happening.

Jiko felt like that when she learned that her only son was going to be killed in the war. I know, because I told her about the fish in my stomach, and she said she knew exactly what I was talking about, and that she had a fish, too, for many years. In fact, she said, she had lots of fishes, some that were small like sardines, some that were medium-sized like carp, and the other ones that were as big as a Bluefin tuna, but the biggest fish of all belonged to Haruki #1, and it was more like the size of a whale. She also said that after she became a nun and renounced the word, she learned how to open up her heart so that the whale could swim away. I'm trying to learn how to do that, too."

~From A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
