I will say I thought the sex in The Barrow was frequently kinky going on (BD)SM. I tolerated it as it's a fantasy novel, but if it was set in a realistic situation (modern or historical) I would have badged the book as more hard core than erotic.

I've set The Barrow as my next book to read, just out of curiosity. Shamefully, it pushed poor old Silas Marner aside

Exactly. Sex in a romance novel or gore in a Living Dead film isn't gratuitous, although one might argue that the novel and films themselves are gratuitous (NB: I wouldn't aruge that about the films). A sex scene in a mystery or thriller or fantasy story is not necessarily gratuitous, but writing in sex scenes just to have them is. And it is, in my opinion, a strike against the author, the editor, the publisher, or some combination of the three.
