Mariana Zapata's books appear to be self-pub, but I have read and liked (a lot) several of them, including The Wall of Winnipeg and Me, Kulti, and From Lukov with Love. So I'm going to go ahead and post (and get for myself) Under Locke, which I haven't read, but which is free right now at Kindle US and UK (free is always nice), and also has 4.5 stars at Amazon on 1,723 ratings. If I've offended anyone by posting, I apologize in advance...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00HYQJPC2/

Spoiler:
Quote:
He was my boss, my brother’s friend, a Widow, an ex-felon, and a man I’d seen casually with a handful of women. But he was everything that gripped me, both the good and the bad. Worst case scenario if things turned awkward between us, I could go somewhere else. I’d gotten over epic heartbreak before, one more wouldn’t kill me.

--

After moving to Austin following six months of unemployment back home, Iris Taylor knows she should be glad to have landed a job so quickly... even if the business is owned by a member of the same motorcycle club her estranged father used to belong to. Except Dex Locke might just be the biggest jerk she’s ever met. He’s rude, impatient and doesn’t know how to tell time.

And the last thing they ever expected was each other.

But it was either the strip club or the tattoo shop.

… she should have chosen the strip club.

I suspect this may come from pdurrant's first posts in the Science Fiction and Fantasy and the Mystery, Suspense & Thrillers threads in this forum. The first message includes:

"Please don't post any self-published books (unless you have read them yourself, think they are excellent, and you're not connected to the author in any way) and please do a search before posting to avoid duplicates."

There were issues with people who were posting there when they should have been posting in the Self-Promotions by Authors and Publishers forum and others which basically said "I haven't read the book or any book by the author but their newsletter said it is really great".

Yes, this ^^^

Some folks are really picky about you have to have read the actual book if it's self-pub before you post it. I myself am a little looser about it - if I've been happy with lots of other titles by a self-pub author (as in this case), or if it's a series that started off as traditionally published, but has now gone self-pub, or other circumstances like that, then I'm okay with it being posted. And, of course, if you have to read the book before you post it, and the sale is short, then the sale is over before you can post. But still, self-pub does seriously offend some people, hence my warning/apology.

There are so many self-pubbed books out there these days, so in general I pretty much limit myself to the above guidelines. Either I've read the book, or read and enjoyed others by the same author, or at least a few of the (many) blogs I follow have recommended the author or book. I often don't specifically identify them as self-pubbed though, and I think if those are the general guidelines, it isn't necessary.

Speaking of self-pubbed book bargains, I highly recommend this book. I read it a few years ago and it was one of my top reads that year. It's kind of bittersweet, emotional, and there's an age difference between the hero (age 40) and heroine (age 26), although the heroine is actually the more mature of the two.

FREE:

Good Time Bad Boy by Sonya Clark

Spoiler:
Wade Sheppard was the king of country for nearly ten years. Now he can’t get Nashville on the phone, much less another record deal. When yet another drunken night onstage gets him fired from a casino gig, Wade is pulled off the road by his manager and sent home. Being back in the small town where he was born and raised, his every screw-up fodder for gossip, isn’t helping any. His family knows him too well, and the pretty, sharp-tongued waitress who catches his eye doesn’t want to know him at all.

Daisy McNeil has more baggage than most her age but she’s finally pulling her life together. College classes will be her ticket out of poverty and instability. She doesn’t mind waiting tables for the time being, but she could do without the rowdy rednecks who sometimes get handsy. When one of them crosses the line, she snaps and gives him and his stupid ten gallon hat the telling off he deserves, but causing a scene gets her fired.

Wade didn’t mean to cost Daisy her job. Chastened, he decides he doesn’t want his train wreck of a life to crash into anybody else. He offers the bar owner a summer of free shows if Daisy can have her job back. Now they’re spending nights together trading barbs and fighting a growing attraction. With a sexy smile and a powerful voice that can make any song his, Wade’s determined to show Daisy that he’s more than just a good time bad boy.

Thanks, I picked up a few.

It amazes me how many of these are actually old Samhain titles only because none of the book blurbs seem to mention that fact.

There are also literally hundreds of Entangled titles on sale for $0.99, but I'm not sure how to filter to get a list of them. Many are backlist, but some are recent titles from 2019. Basically, if you have any favorite authors that write for Entangled, whether they are contemporary, paranormal, historical, or YA, check their books - they may be on sale. In some cases it's just the first in a series, but I saw quite a few where the entire series is for sale.

I've only glanced through the first few pages of the freebies, but so far it looks as if these are overwhelmingly first-in-series. Maybe it changes in later pages, but so far...

Nice to have any freebies, and nice to get to try a series for free, but maybe not so nice depending on how much the rest of the titles are if you like it .

Speaking of the Entangled sale, there's a series by Kelly Moran on sale (each book $0.99) that I loved and highly recommend. It follows a team of paranormal investigators and had the perfect blend of romance with just enough paranormal activity, suspense and mystery to keep me glued to it, but not enough to keep me up at night. (I'm not a thriller or horror fan).
