Found a stand-alone fantasy book that sounds interesting. The Barrow by Mark Smylie is $1.99 at Amazon.

I like that it sounds like an adventure for a lot of non-typical, low level characters as opposed to the usual earth-shaking, page-spanning quest.

Warning: several of the reviews mention fairly explicit sex scenes in the book. I just bought it, so I'm not sure how serious that is.

I guess now I know why the publisher is referred to as the Randy Penguin

I’ve got the paper version and my partner referred to the sex as gratuitous. However, it is Artesia after all (although she doesn’t feature) so of course I got it. I do wish Smylie would finish the last miniseries. You can largely skip the sex but some of the plot hangs on it.

Thanks for that. I saw that the book acted as a prequel for a comic series. Even though I do read comics, I'd never heard of Artesia (except as a city in my home state of California, or a type of well).

On Goodreads, the author said he was working on another book, but that was in 2016. Maybe real life intervened?

I whole-heartedly second the recommendation (and for 'Cyteen'), but the link seems to be for an audio book. I can't find it in the amazon.co.uk Kindle store either. Not available as an ebook from Amazon?

I tend to agree that the sex is gratuitous at time. What does bug me is why the book is still referred to as the first in a series when nothing has happened in 5 years. Even the swordandbarrow website news was last updated in 2014 and his story in Blackguards is from 2015.

Gratuitous Sex in Art is frowned upon, but Gratuitous Sex in Life is gettin' lucky. Never made sense to me.
