Book Description (Amazon):
A New York Times bestseller that brings to life one of the bloodiest battles of World War II—and the beginning of the end of the Third Reich.

On August 5, 1942, giant pillars of dust rose over the Russian steppe, marking the advance of the 6th Army, an elite German combat unit dispatched by Hitler to capture the industrial city of Stalingrad and press on to the oil fields of Azerbaijan. The Germans were supremely confident; in three years, they had not suffered a single defeat.The Luftwaffe had already bombed the city into ruins. German soldiers hoped to complete their mission and be home in time for Christmas.

The siege of Stalingrad lasted five months, one week, and three days. Nearly two million men and women died, and the 6th Army was completely destroyed. Considered by many historians to be the turning point of World War II in Europe, the Soviet Army’s victory foreshadowed Hitler’s downfall and the rise of a communist superpower.

Bestselling author William Craig spent five years researching this epic clash of military titans, traveling to three continents in order to review documents and interview hundreds of survivors.
Enemy at the Gates is the enthralling result: the definitive account of one of the most important battles in world history. It became a New York Times bestseller and was also the inspiration for the 2001 film of the same name, starring Joseph Fiennes and Jude Law.
I bought the Kindle book (not the audio) and read it over the weekend. Good, and very useful to learn more about WWII. My history classes always stopped around the US Civil war. We never had time for a single sentence about WWI or WWII. I've felt compelled to learn some, myself, now that I'm older and can appreciate the history. School being always about dates, I'm learning that history can be interesting outside of a text book. (I used to do American Revolutionary War re-enactment, which is what started my interest in history.)

Thanks. Glad you got benefit from the post.

I preferred to have the audio. Finances are tight, right now, though, so I checked both of the libraries where I have borrowing privileges. Neither one had the audiobook, so I emailed both of them asking if they would consider purchasing the audiobook in downloadable digital.

Libraries depend a lot on lists of recommended books for libraries. This title may not appear on anyone's list. I tried to speak as highly in favor about the book/audiobook as I could. We'll see what happens . . . .

£2.99 -- It -- Stephen King/ Steven Weber --> 44.9 hrs/ R-3.5 --> paranormal

Quote:
Whispersync: no deals at this time

To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine, was just their hometown: familiar, well ordered for the most part. A good place to live. It was the children who saw - and felt - what made Derry so horribly different.

In the storm drains, in the sewers, IT lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each one's deepest dread. Sometimes IT reached up, seizing, tearing, killing....

The adults, knowing better, knew nothing. Time passed, and the children grew up, moved away. The horror of IT was deep buried, wrapped in forgetfulness. Until they were called back, once more to confront IT as IT stirred and coiled in the sullen depths of their memories, reaching up again to make their past nightmares a terrible present reality.

I was perusing the Win-Win Sale at Audible (see first post for link to the sale), and noticed that The Complete Sherlock Holmes is part of it. 58 hours of Holmes for $4.95, and it's narrated by Simon Vance, who is one of my favorite narrators.

$3.95 -- Born Standing Up -- Steve Martin/ Steve Martin --> 4.1 hrs/ R-4.3 --> memoir

Quote:
Born Standing Up: A Comic's Life

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($10.99)

In the mid-70s, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. Born Standing Up is, in his own words, the story of "why I did stand-up and why I walked away".

At age 10 Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott's Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory.

Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times: the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late 60s, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the 70s.

$11.99 -- Folly -- Laurie King/ Frank Muller --> 16.0 hrs/ R-4.1 --> suspense

Quote:
Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($11.99)

Laurie R. King creates unforgettable characters and situations in her mystery series featuring Kate Martinelli and Mary Russell. In Folly, she tells the gripping story of a woman on the edge of the world--and the edge of sanity. Tragedy and mental illness have been dark companions of Rae Newborn for more than 50 years. Her life seems to start rebuilding itself, though, when she moves to a deserted island to restore the house her mysterious great-uncle built in the 1920s. But Rae senses powerful forces stirring on the island. Is the skin-crawling feeling she has of someone watching her only in her mind, or has something disturbingly real taken notice of Rae? Like King's best-selling suspense thriller A Darker Place, Folly brilliantly portrays a woman pushed to her limits and beyond. Frank Muller's powerful narration captures all the terrors that stalk Rae from without and from within.

No Whispersync / $29.95 Audible

A bold English adventurer; an invincible Japanese warlord; a beautiful woman torn between two ways of life, two ways of love—all brought together in an extraordinary saga of a time and a place aflame with conflict, passion, ambition, lust, and the struggle for power.

James Clavell’s Shōgun is a modern classic, a masterpiece of historical fiction that will continue to endure for decades to come.

Thanks for mentioning the Win-Win Sale, which ends Sept 26. Somehow I had missed the memo about it and was about to Lose-Lose.

$1.99 -- Flat Spin -- David Freed/ Ray Porter --> 9.1 hrs/ R-4.3 --> mystery

Quote:
Flat Spin --> Cordell Logan Mystery (book 1 of 5)

Whispersync: Audible ($4.49) | Kindle ($8.69)

The irresistible David Freed’s first mystery is a stay-up-late-to-finish thriller.

Based in sunny Rancho Bonita—“California’s Monaco” as the city’s moneyed minions like to call it—Cordell Logan is a literate, sardonic flight instructor and aspiring Buddhist with dwindling savings and a shadowy past. When his beautiful ex-wife, Savannah, shows up out of the blue to tell him that her husband has been murdered in Los Angeles, Logan is quietly pleased. Savannah’s late husband, after all, is Arlo Echevarria, the man she left Logan for.

Logan and Echevarria were once comrades-in-arms assigned to a top secret military assassination team known simply as Alpha. Though Savannah was never privy to the gritty details of their assignment, she suspects that Echevarria’s death must be related to the work he did for the government. The only problem is that the LAPD can find no record of Echevarria ever having toiled for Uncle Sam. Savannah wants Logan to tell the police what he knows. At first he refuses, but then, relying on his small, aging airplane, the “Ruptured Duck,” and on the skills he honed working for the government, Logan doggedly hunts Echevarria’s killer.

His trail takes him from the glitzy Las Vegas Strip to the most dangerous ghettos of inner-city Oakland, from darkened Russian Mafia haunts in West Los Angeles to the deserts of Arizona. Along the way, Logan is stalked by a mysterious motorist who repeatedly tries to kill him, but that’s the least of his problems. It is his love-hate relationship with Savannah, a woman for whom Logan continues to pine in spite of himself, that threatens to consume him.

Transcending the worlds of murder, aviation, and international counterterrorism, Flat Spin resonates with a veracity that only an author who knows his subject firsthand can deliver.

$3.95 -- The Mind Club -- Daniel Wegner, et al/ David Marantz --> 9.8 hrs/ R-4.4 --> psychology

Quote:
The Mind Club: Who Thinks, What Feels, and Why It Matters

Whispersync: Audible ($3.95) | Kindle ($14.99)

Download the accompanying reference guide

From dogs to gods, dive into the science of mysterious minds - including your own.

Nothing seems more real than the minds of other people. When you consider what your boss is thinking or whether your spouse is happy, you are admitting them into the "mind club". It's easy to assume other humans can think and feel, but what about a cow, a computer, a corporation? What kinds of minds do they have?

Daniel M. Wegner and Kurt Gray are award-winning psychologists who have discovered that minds - while incredibly important - are a matter of perception. Their research opens a trove of new findings, with insights into human behavior that are fascinating, frightening, and funny. The Mind Club explains why we love some animals and eat others, why people debate the existence of God so intensely, how good people can be so cruel, and why robots make such poor lovers. By investigating the mind perception of extraordinary targets - animals, machines, comatose people, God - Wegner and Gray explain what it means to have a mind and why it matters so much.

Fusing cutting-edge research and personal anecdotes, The Mind Club explores the moral dimensions of mind perception with wit and compassion, revealing the surprisingly simple basis for what compels us to love and hate, to harm and to protect.

Ebook: 4.3 star (24) at Amazon. Unusually high number of "2's;" I didn't explore why. About 3.95 (123) at GoodReads. Ratings dispersion pretty normal overall there.

$3.99 -- Another Thing to Fall -- Laura Lippman/ Linda Emond --> 9.1 hrs/ R-3.7 --> mystery

Quote:
Another Thing to Fall --> Tess Monaghan Series (book 10 of 12)

Whispersync: Audible ($12.99) | Kindle ($8.99)

The California dream weavers have invaded Charm City with their cameras, their stars, and their controversy.

When private investigator Tess Monaghan literally runs into the crew of the fledgling TV series Mann of Steel while sculling, she expects sharp words and evil looks, not an assignment. But the company has been plagued by a series of disturbing incidents since its arrival on location in Baltimore: bad press, union threats, and small, costly on-set "accidents" that have wreaked havoc with its shooting schedule. As a result, Mann's creator, Flip Tumulty, the son of a Hollywood legend, is worried for the safety of his young female lead, Selene Waites, and asks Tess to serve as her bodyguard/babysitter. Tumulty's concern may be well founded. Not long ago, a Baltimore man was discovered dead in his own home, surrounded by photos of the beautiful, difficult superstar-in-the-making.

In the past, Tess has had enough trouble guarding her own body. Keeping a spoiled movie princess under wraps may be more than she can handle - even with the help of Tess' icily unflappable friend Whitney - since Selene is not as naive as everyone seems to think and is far more devious than she initially appears to be.

This is not Tess' world. And these are not her kind of people, with their vanities, their self-serving agendas and invented personas, and their remarkably skewed visions of reality - from the series' aging, shallow, former pretty-boy leading man to its resentful, always-on-the-make co-writer, to the officious young assistant who may be too hungry for her own good.

But the fish-out-of-water P.I. is abruptly pulled back in by an occurrence she's all too familiar with: murder. Suddenly, the wall of secrets around Mann of Steel is in danger of toppling, leaving shattered dreams, careers, and lives scattered among the ruins - a catastrophe that threatens the people Tess cares about...and the city she loves.
