Christmas Stories 2017 v1 --> Assorted Stories

Tis that time of year to compile a collection of free/inexpensive Christmas stories. Vol 1 will include all Christmas stories except "A Christmas Carol". Due to the sheer volume of that perennial classic, it'll be the subject of Vol 2. Both posts will be linked in the OP.

Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, observed primarily on December 25 as a religious and cultural celebration among billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it is preceded by the season of Advent or the Nativity Fast and initiates the season of Christmastide, which historically in the West lasts twelve days and culminates on Twelfth Night; in some traditions, Christmastide includes an octave.

The Twelve Days of Christmas, also known as Twelvetide, is a festive Christian season celebrating the Nativity of Jesus Christ. In most Western ecclesiastical traditions, "Christmas Day" is considered the "First Day of Christmas" and the Twelve Days are 25 December – 5 January, inclusive. For many Christian denominations; for example, the Anglican Communion and Lutheran Church, the Twelve Days are identical to Christmastide, but for others, e.g., the Roman Catholic Church, "Christmastide" lasts longer than the Twelve Days of Christmas.

A Christmas Carol -- Charles Dickens (1812~1870)

A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens. It was first published in London by Chapman & Hall on 19 December 1843. The novella met with instant success and critical acclaim. Carol tells the story of a bitter old miser named Ebenezer Scrooge and his transformation into a gentler, kindlier man after visitations by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Yet to Come.

The book was written at a time when the British were examining and exploring Christmas traditions from the past as well as new customs such as Christmas cards and Christmas trees. Carol singing took a new lease on life during this time. Dickens' sources for the tale appear to be many and varied, but are, principally, the humiliating experiences of his childhood, his sympathy for the poor, and various Christmas stories and fairy tales.

A Christmas Carol has been abridged in 9 episodes, each about 15 minutes long. You can download the episodes here. You can also play a video of each episode which offers the text on-screen while you listen.

There is a set of Study notes for the series and a transcript of each episode which can be printed out, copied and distributed as you wish. Some of the spelling and grammar used reflects the 1843 first edition from which the text is taken.

Marvelous -- thank you! I listened to a David Baldacci book over a Thanksgiving trip, and was itching for another. But I wasn't a member, and they aren't under $10. This low cost membership worked for me, and I bought the first in the series book which had been sitting in my shopping cart.

Now I'm ready for my Christmas trip.

Little Donkey is quite cute, a little sweet, and not overly Christmassy. In case you are overwhelmed by too much Christmas! Anyway, I liked it, several times through.
