I live in San Diego-California. 3 weeks ago I purchased an Amazon Kindle Fire through Craigslist. In order to use it properly the device needs to be registered. At the time of purchase the lady who sold it to me said that it was registered under her husband's name who is a police officer in the SDPD and he wouldn't be home before 8pm. She asked me if it was OK to wait a little bit. I said OK. I made the payment and got home. Long story short it turned out that the item was blacklisted, which means that it was reported as a lost or stolen item and it cannot be registered. I called the lady but she did not answer
my call. I told her that I am going file a complaint against her then she said that she was on the phone with Amazon and trying to fix ix. After a few hours she asked me if it was OK to wait until 8:00am next morning since they both have to wake up early in the morning (at the time it was around 11pm) and I said OK. The next morning she stopped responding my texts and calls. I went to the police station and explained what happened and the guy/office over there said that there was nothing to do. I called Amazon and asked for the owners information (such as zip code) to make sure that the person that I bought it from was the real owner however Amazon was not able give me any information at all. I ended up putting the device back on Craigslist and wrote that the item is blacklisted and I made it very clear. I got bunch of emails from people who wanted to buy it or were asking about it being blacklisted. Someone from the military purchased the device 3 days ago, knowing that the device was "as is". This morning she texted me saying that she wants her money back otherwise she is going to file a charge against me and file a report to Fraud Department for defrauding a government employee. I still have a copy of the ad that I posted on CL and the emails that I got from different people before or after her email questions about it being blacklisted. I can prove that she knew before she bought it however my question is what should I do at this stage? Any helpful response will be appreciated. |

Also it wasn't one of "too good to be true" deals. The price was normal for a used kindle fire. The reason that I bought this particular one, the person who sold it to me said that she needed money for her mom's funeral. Otherwise I was on my way to buy another one anyways but she called me when I was driving and I drove all the way back. I thought I was being a nice person but I ended up getting scammed.

You can screw her like you got screwed, or you can give her her money back. Sorry.

Thanks for the response. However I am not trying to screw anyone over. On the other hand it is unfair to buy an item by knowing that it won't work properly and then complaining about it.

I guess there's no easy solution when Amazon doesn't want it (and won't tell you who owned it) and neither do the police. I understand the need for blacklisting, of course, but it just seems so wasteful to simply write the device off forever in its blacklisted state. I'm not sure if it would be feasible (without too many people abusing the system), but it seems there should be some sort of official process to "reprieve" some of these blacklisted devices. Rehabilitate them to their fully functioning status somehow and donate them to organizations—something. Anything would be better than just playing craigslist bingo with them for the rest of time.

That's probably for the best. But "honest and nice person" aside... I'd still be asking; "Just what exactly did you think 'blacklisted' meant?"

Actually I did ask her. I texted and e-mailed her and sent her a copy of the ad. I also said if she wants to go any further we can request a copy of the original ad from Craigslist to prove that there are no changes on the ad.

I agree. It's sad that you were honest in your ad, spelled everything out, and then got the fool who can't comprehend English. I think you've done the right thing, despite how it turned out for you. What you might want to consider is selling the unit cheap for parts. The battery and the screen are most likely worth some value to someone.

You don't need to part out a blacklisted Kindle...just sideload books with Calibre...leave the wireless off...and read. It's not useless simply because you cannot register it with Amazon. I haven't registered mine (bought at Target before the ninnies start in) and sideload all content...works fine. Now with a Fire I don't know if you can sideload other media or not as I don't have one.

Why not jailbreak the Fire and treat it like an Android tablet? Put a Kindle app on it and register the app with your Amazon account. Amazon doesn't know what device it's on. All they know is that you have an Android device associated with that registered app. Your content will go to that app in the same manner as an actual Kindle device.
For me, I have 1 registered Kindle (KK) and 6 registered Kindle apps (2 Android, 1 Windows PC, 1 Kindle Cloud Reader, 1 Apple iOS, and 1 webOS). |
