I guess I have to be a little less critical of TSA hiring practices. Apparently there are no potential employees left at the bottom of the barrel, so they no longer automatically reject on the basis of courtesy during the hiring interview.

My trip to Hawaii (and back, too) was uneventful. While I still don't believe I ever heard a "please" or "thank you", I also didn't feel bullied or harassed by a wannabe police force reject. When approaching the metal detector for the flight out I was just politely waved forward instead of ordered forward, and on the way out of Hawaii, I was actually told "you may step forward".

I did have a moment's pause when I was approached in my seat and asked to confirm my last name (with no explanation), but since a SWAT team wasn't waiting for me when we landed in San Francisco, I assume my boarding pass mis-scanned when boarding.

As for turning off the ereader, this was United, and their spiel does now include the "anything with an on/off switch" qualifier. However, (any flight attendants need read no further) I just put it in standby and closed it until the flight attendants were told to buckle in.

The instructions also state that such qualifying electronics are also supposed to be stowed in carry-on luggage, so apparently I, too, can expect a knock at the door any minute for this flagrant dual violation.

Actually, I think if the screen doesn't glow, it doesn't attract attention unless the person is specifically looking for an ereader.
