Q&A
4:56: We're back, and questions kick off with a question about ePub formats. They like it, which is why their entire catalog will switch to it when the Nook launches. Does this mean what I think it means?? Will all ebook readers be able to go to B&N once the nook comes out and buy epub?? |

This looks really nice, but for me it all depends on how I can navigate through my books. If the cover view is the only way to scroll through thousands of books, that would suck. I hope there's some way to organize the library.
However, on a shallow note, I do like all the accessories. ![]() |

This is from the B&N Tech Specs page:
* EPUB and eReader Formats * PDFs load easily and look great. * PDFs, MP3s and graphics load to your nook from your computer or micro SD card. * Use JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP files to create personal screensavers. It says it supports EPUB and eReader but it only lists PDFs, MP3s and graphics as being loadable from a computer or mSD card? |

I get the impression that the Nook's primary format will be eReader and that's what you'll be getting from the B&N store. Will it support ePub with DRM? Adobe Digital Editions? To my mind a commonly-accepted standard format is essential to widespread eBook acceptance and ePub, preferably without DRM, but even with DRM is the best current candidate. I just hope that Nook doesn't further muddy the situation by pushing eReader.
On a different topic, i'm curious to see their pdf capability, hopefully with some sort of reflow capability to fit the small screen. The Kindle DX's pdf capability doesn't quite cut it. |

I'm really happy to see that it supports ePub. I love my Kindle DX when it comes to a larger screen device, but I'm disappointed that Amazon doesn't support ePub. I'm disappointed in Amazon's lack of folders, lack of an SD card, lack of a replaceable battery, and shoddy PDF support. It looks like B&N is heading in the right direction.
I'm still not sure if I want to get a Nook, but I'm seriously thinking about it. I suppose I'll wait to find out if they have some type of folders support, and how good their PDF support is before deciding. |

*sigh* what to do, what to do. I pre-ordered an international Kindle for a family member that retired to Mexico as his Christmas present. he's in his late 70s, a big reader and reasonably tech savvy so I did not hesitate with the Kindle. it looks like this is going to be just as easy to use though...
*sigh* |

I will be making plans to be in the closest B&N store Dec. 4th (the nearest weekend to Nov. 30th). to do a hands on. So far the only thing I don't like is that I haven't seen folder support. While the LCD scroll through is neat with the colors and the covers, it's not very practical for me - I have too many books. But if they have something that hasn't been announced for that, (I notice the press conference was light on technical aspects), then I may yet end up getting one. Looks good from a glance, but I wonder how easy it will be to use.
I don't want to dig down through a menu to change my font size or bookmark a page. I hope the usb cable can transfer books, images and mp3s to the Nook. Some of the bookcovers look nice, but I wish they used the same way to attach the bookcovers to the reader as Sony has done- much more elegant. Wonder what the battery life is like with that lcd screen. |
