I think that the ability to browse the Kindle store and download books wirelessly is what makes the Kindle so attractive. I could give my parents a Kindle, for example, who have never used, and don't want to learn to use a computer.

I think this is purely a move to gain a bit of marketshare in a hurry while they bring the country specific stores online. Amazon are probably quite worried about Sony.

You just have to use a software proxy. You then can simulate, being in the US. Original intent of such proxies was, to hide your identity. In this case, I hide my original location.

I don't know if they're worried about Sony or not, but it may be a stop gap until they can get the country specific deals done as you say.

One thing Amazon seemed to help with when they released in the US was getting more books out quicker. A lot of those books were released not only for the Kindle, but the Sony and through places like BoB and FW. So them releasing the K internationally could end up being a good thing for ebook users regardless of what device they use.

where it is good or not really depends on the 'geographical restriction' issue for books - and that is deemed to be down to the publishers .... though i can see the kindle might become a driver to kick the publishers into the 21stC !

Yup. I was having those thoughts too. Amazon seem to have done a very good job at getting US publishers on board. Hopefully they'll be able to do the same with the international Kindle.

Hopefully soon since the selection outside the US is pretty pitiful.

True. I guess what I meant was it seemed to get US pubs going a bit quicker on releasing stuff (especially back catalog stuff), maybe it'll do the same for the UK pubs and elsewhere.

True, that is definitely a feature that has set it apart and given it the lead. Others will follow soon and I expect that approach to become available in many other devices - i.e. the wireless access included without a monthly fee. That to me is the true innovation with the kindle/amazon approach.

I can not see what so good about this "Kindle international" if you have to pay additional $1.99 for each book downloaded outside US.

True, but compared to it not being available at all?

That only applies to people in the US, and even then, only applies to wireless downloads - basically, it's the roaming charge for the data transfer.

What's so good about it? I guess it's that it let you buy books wirelessly in many different countries in the world. Perhaps that's worth paying $1.99 extra for for many people. But you don't have to pay it if you don't want to.

Though in theory as with most sites. You can download the purchase again if needed.

The good thing is that Kindle BOOKS are available outside of the US! I don't care for the device itself.

Only if you have a Kindle, though. I don't believe even the iPhone/Touch app is avaliable outside America... so you can't really seperate them.
