Couldn't we just stick to the German term "elektronisches Lesegerät"?
This is a beautiful and explanatory mixture of words as only the German language could create. No double meaning, no misconception. No fun either, but then we're talking about the German language ... Definitely nobody outside the German-speaking world will ever be able to pronounce it correctly, thus it beats "liseuse" (in German: lisöhs) easily in the first round by technical knockout. We could even shorten it to "eleles". |

Where did I put my darllenwr chan llyfrau?
I want to upload an e-llyfr. Somehow, I suspect that German is easier to pronounce than Welsh. |

My admittedly abysmal command of Irish gives us léitheoir leictreonacha as another option.

I'm liking all of those!
K-Thom, German is beautiful as per it's inventive character: words like glühbirne (lightbulb, glüh=light and birne=pear) are so poetic! Quote:

In Australia, they're called "Wotth'bloodyhellareyadoinwiththatcomputathingamyB ruceandwhyaren'yyadrinkinbeerandwatchinthefootyyab igpoof!" (or "Beer Coaster" for short).
Cheers, Marc (It's possible I just made this up) |

I wonder, will the day come when we will just call them "books"? These days, when I tell people that I will send them mail, nobody expects a written letter.

![]() I already do... I'm reading books. In Dutch, you can often see the word "plankje" (aka, small wooden board). |

True, but everyone I know calls email "email", not "mail". The word "mail" can now substitute for "email", but it hasn't taken its place.

Or we could call it "ready" (pronounce reed-y, just in case).
A mobile phone is a "handy" in German. Don't know who ever came up with this term, but it's short, and German people associated the "hand" with it (please don't ask what we used to hold a telephone handset all those years before ...). I never experienced the look of a native English speaker when a German asked him or her for her "handy"; it didn't seem to have caused any diplomatic conflicts, though. Just keep it in mind before internationalizing "liseuse". You may start a war just by accident! So I'm whole-heartedly suggesting "ready". ![]() |
