One thing 505 got that no other model so far has is the extruded aluminium body. I guess that might be one of the things that makes it harder for Sony to lower its price.

Bracing between the brace of my thumb and the bulging security connector, I found was more comfortable to hold than just the thin profile of the reader (It's tough to test such when that big security lock is there anyway)
Back buttons wouldn't be practical for anybody using the reader with a cover.

I am interested in the 600 if it has search and a screen as good as the 505. Dictionary would be great too but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

I remember reading an article a few months back wherein someone at Sony (not sure if it was Robert Nell) said that the aim of Sony was to get the Sony reader into the hands of as many readers out there as possible. Maybe that is what the Sony PRS-300 is for. Let’s face it, not everyone can indulge themselves with expensive devices. There are lots of people who are using their computers to read because they can’t afford to get an ebook reading device. And people who just want a portable reading device. This could be an answer to that problem especially if it comes with an affordable price.

The 700 is probably being replaced by the 600.

Oh, good news!

It looks like the new version of ADE will finally show up on Sony. All I have to do is dish out a couple of hundreds of bucks for the new reader which will have a marginally better hardware that I don't really need.

You suggested earlier that it's not because we have discovered about those two readers that Sony doesn't have an other one in the works. I totally agree with that, I'd be inclined to suggest that the 700 could be replaced by something else than the 600 in a higher end class.

Since newer chinese devices have come out, Sony's business model had to change, they just can't rely on expensive machines to compete. I think that's why the 300 is coming out. We might see a down priced trend start with these newer models.

I found the service manuals for the PRS-300 and 600 by using this kind of link:
docs.sony.com/release/smd/_sm.pdf

It seems Sony has not reactivated these links after the leak and is not aware of the leak (I asked them via Twitter).

Also by not reactiviting these links, Sony's authorized servicers may not be able to download manuals for a while from their Reference Library.

An extruded aluminum enclosure probably doesn't cost Sony more than $3. My company orders extruded aluminum enclosures of similar type from China, and they cost about $10 in quantities of 1000. So, they are probably not the cost factor.

I'm intrigued by the 600...my husband has a 700 and I have a 505. I really like the functionality the touch screen adds to the reader, but wouldn't give up the clarity of my 505 for that functionality. IF the 600 combines the screen clarity of the 505 with functionality of the touch screen (searches, PDF zoom, etc) I'd be very interested in it.

I would like to see the Sony Reader introduced to Australia at some point in the future (probably not with the PRS-300/600 series).
