One question about the inability to Download & Transfer via USB. Does the Scribe allow D&T so we can eliminate MTP as a reason for not being able to use that feature?

Download & Transfer via USB is available for my Scribe. One caveat is that I’m running firmware 5.16.9, which is not the latest version; MTP was however introduced in version 5.16.3, so my Scribe does use MTP.

I don’t think MTP is the issue, seems to me more like a deliberate move by Amazon to phase out Download & Transfer via USB.

Interesting. I have never seen an ad supplied by Kobo for a 3rd party on any of my Kobos' sleep screen. I have a choice between a book cover or the images in my screensaver's directory.

Where did you find that image?

Edit: the reason for that question is that the image is a low resolution 360x640 image.

Doubtful. The firmware is the same. The only differences are due to the affiliate such as FNAC and Walmart where you see their information as the screensaver.

I should make it clear that I do not consider book recommendations, suggesting Kobo Plus, etc. as being 3rd party advertising.

My speculation regarding location may or may not be incorrect, but settings to control features do not require differences in firmware.

MTP in and of itself does not take away D&T. D&T is reported to still be available for original Scribes running firmware that has USB mass storage disabled and MTP enabled.

You should consider actually reading and understanding posts that have already been made.

But the Scribe originally did not have MTP. So it may have been allowed D&T and never removed when it went MTP or Amazon did not want to take away D&T when it went MTP.

Kovid (and probably user guide) explicitly states conversion to fixed layout ePub is not supported.

KCC does not create a table of contents for the ePub (which needs a human to decide which pages should be in it and what the labels are), so if you want one, you need to add one.

If you are starting with AZW3, Kindle Unpack does a good job converting to fixed layout ePub, and if will have whatever ToC the AZW3 has, which very often is not very useful. So you may want to add more entries to the ToC.

And neither will convert to PDF.

I like to have 4 formats available for comics (CBZ/ePub/PDF/KFX), so I mostly use Kindle Create. You can add table of contents, Panel View (if you want to side load KFX) and then convert the KPF to KFX comic format using KFX Output plugin. Then use the plugin export to generate CBZ, FXL ePub or PDF. The ePub, PDF, and KFX will have the ToC defined in Kindle Create. There are a couple of cosmetic issues I like to fix in the ePub and PDF output (takes less than a minute or two), but I have not gotten around to reporting the issues so that they can be addressed.

Print Replica format books will usually not have a D&T option for Scribe (or any Kindle), unless it is a 'write-on' book for Scribe. I have also seen a few graphic novels which don't download to any Kindle even though they are in comic format and not print replica. It's the publisher's choice which devices get to download (either directly or via USB).

MTP has nothing to do with this.

Or better still if you have the new Paperwhite can you check to see if this is the case?
