The Tolino Shine 5 uses the same OS as the Tolino Colour, when you go to download the update from Tolino the 2 devices share the same download links.

Soooooo, i just installed the latest tolino software (5.0.178115) on my Kobo Libra Colour and everything seems fine but the dev settings seem to be missing ive looked into libnickel and havent found a reason for the settings not to show up, you can still toggle them using the config file.

Sadly it also seems that NIckelMenu and KFMon are broken, ive managed to install them after repacking the KoboRoot.tgz into the new update format but it doesnt seem to be doing anything.

NickelMenu is not broken. It was not designed or tested with Tolino firmware.

My guess is that firmware has a lot of changes and that would require work to get NickelMenu to work. You really should be back to the Kobo firmware.

Your comment adds no value to this thread, I am experimenting and sharing my experience. Tolino firmware 5.x is identical to kobo and im 99% sure 5.x will be released for kobo next year. Also fw 5.0.175773 was a recovery update locking you into the new OTA mechanism unless you reflash your recovery partition.

Oaky so i have found a way to enable devmode (visual menu included) on latest 5.4 fw, all you need to do is replace /usr/local/Kobo/branch file with a file that doesnt contain "release/" easiest way to do this is

echo "devmode" > branch
tar -czvf Kobo.tgz branch

then put Kobo.tgz into the .kobo folder on your reader.
Make sure to also do the devmodeon dance

It worked on my tolino shine color, by using KoReader file-manager and terminal emulator

Very helpful. Thank you for that.

I was given a Tolino Shine 5 as a gift. As I already own a Kobo Clara Colour, the tolino is lying unused in the drawer.

I use it as my test device for all sorts of things. My question is, would it be possible to somehow get my tolino to downgrade to the 4.xx Kobo Clara BW firmware? I'm on holiday at the moment and feel like doing a bit of tinkering.

Could you compare how text in Kepubs is rendered on both devices? I find the letter spacing on the Shine 5 too narrow and have been wondering if it's the same on Kobo.

Kobo overhauled their toolchain and software versions.


They have upgraded from Qt 5 to Qt 6. Firmware images are now created using Yocto, with much more up-to-date software (including Python!).


To get NickelMenu etc to work will require an updated NickelTC (or an equivalent replacement) so that they can be compiled with the correct library and Qt versions.


No one has yet had the time or motivation to create the new toolchain. Probably the best way would be to figure out the most compatible Yocto layers and use that.
