Oddly enough, the majority of adults in the US are not college educated (22% of adults 25 or older have a 4 year degree) and somehow managed to support themselves, many times by working in a store.

I never finished my degree and have been able to support my self. I had my own martial arts school and my partner was a jeweler. I trained with him and been a jeweler since the late '70s. I have owned my own store for 31 years and counting.

I guess it depends on where you live and whether there are other people in your household contributing to expenses. Where I live, it would not be possible for me to live by myself on the typical low wages paid by stores.

That's why people have roommates. Heck, there are even people in NYC who work as a clerk in a store. Somehow they manage.

Because the cost of living is higher in large metropolitan areas, wages are usually higher in those areas. A jewelry chain that also leased the jewelry space in department store in New York and New Jersey agreed to take over the leases in a department store chain in the Midwest. They wanted some of their managers and assistant managers to transfer out there. When they found out how much houses and rentals were in the Midwest most wanted to go. Then they found out that they would be taking a pay cut commensurate with the cost of living they all refused. This was in the late 1980's.

Sadly something of the inverse is happening in my province. It advertised itself as a good place to work from home (despite the lack of high-speed internet if you go 20 minutes out of town ). Now people are coming to one of the poorest provinces with Ontario and B.C. incomes and driving up the house prices.

Btw, eating off paper plates at home is very uncommon in my country. I don't know anyone who does that. So it really seems to be a US thing.

I think dishwashers make the most sense for young people who wash dishes in restaurants, them not wanting to bring their work to home.

I eat very processed and healthy meals, but I don't use paper plates. Also, since I don't drink alcoholic beverages, there are no wine glass 'flutes' on the table as well.
