'Like' instead of 'said'. Two teenagers having a conversation:
So I'm like hello' and he's like hiya' and I'm like how are you? and he's like yeah, good! ad infinitum....... |

Along those lines, I can't stand hearing "thank you for your service" when people find out I served in the military. To me, being in the military is nothing special. It's just a job and no more important than any other job. |

I have no idea where any of my colloquialisms originate because I moved around a lot. I've lived in 9 states (all west of the Mississippi River) and 3 countries (eastern Asia), thanks to my father's Army career and my stint in the Army. |

Don’t know if this was mentioned before.
Celebrities or commentators on TV or Radio. When they’re asked a question, they respond by saying…….No, yeah, and then continue with their answer. Why not use one or the other, or preferably neither, and just answer the blooming question. |

And, as if 'impact' in place of 'affect' and 'effect' wasn't bad enough, we now have 'impactful', usually in place of 'effective'. I recently heard a politician say "A Royal Commission into <blah blah> would be more 'impactful' than a Parliamentary Committee". I immediately had a mental image of wigged & gowned barristers climbing into the ring with their gloves on, or confronting one another in The Domain** at dawn with their pistols drawn. ** our Boston Common. ![]() It's young-person slang. It'll go the way of "the eel's ankles" if we're lucky. But probably not soon enough for us. Last edited by pdurrant; 05-06-2022 at 11:16 AM. |

I understand what they mean when they say that’s “sick”. However the visual I get when I hear it is of somebody vomiting up their cookies. ![]() |

The use of "s__t" to mean "stuff" gives me a similarly unpleasant visual. For most of my life "s__t" was typcally used as an expletive and I can't seem to get used to its current usage.

I seem to have memories a few decades back where you often found righteous shit being passed around at parties.

I grumbled earlier on this thread about "invite" used as a noun (I was raised up to believe that "invitation" is the noun, and "invite" is the verb, darn it! And somebody saying "Golly, she gave me a invite to the wedding" just sounds WRONG! I hear it spoken in the voice of Gomer Pyle...)
Now, I am also becoming irrationally irritated about "Save-the-date". What is the world coming to? ![]() |
