He didn't say Amazon doesn't know the last page read info. He did say he doubts this info is relied upon as the only info for pages read.
He did say he "...doubt very much that it relies on the page you happen to be on at the time the book is returned." |

Last page read is a metric that Amazon stores, and it uses that to set your place when you open the book on another device. So it gets used quite independently from anything related to KU.

This file also appears to store metrics on reading sessions, average time spent on a page, page outliers (too long or too short a time spent on a page), etc. so I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon actually does use the same file as a basis for calculating KU page read counts. What does Amazon do to pay the author when a KU book is downloaded to a Kindle that has the WiFi off while that book is being read? So the next time WiFi is on, the book has been read and deleted.

I know there are users who never connect to WiFi, but aren't they they exception to the rule, and not the norm? |

Granted, I've never actually bothered monitoring if the .sdr folder still gets deleted when the device is on airplane mode. It's possible that the Kindle waits until it's connected to the internet so it can upload reading progress before deleting the sidecar files. Either that or there's an extra copy of the data stored on a database on the Kindle. Data's like super tiny anyway (less than 500 bytes). |

Newest FW does have the read status. That may stay alive after deleting. Since it is possible to download the book and transfer via USB, if that Kindle never goes online, Amazon cannot know. To avoid anything like that, I always make sure to download it directly to the Kindle and return it from there.

Very old fashioned since I knew I wanted to keep track of the number of books so I just did the 4 vertical lines with a cross-stroke for the 5th. Count the number of blocks, multiply by 5 and bob's your uncle. In this case, I was working on the 75th block when I gave up since it was getting more boring than watching the network monitoring screens.

As for the content, spellchecking is a lost art, grammar has been left in the dustbin, misused homonyms are doing very well and and anachronisms are making a strong comeback. It made me long for an editor with a well sharpened pencil. |

Its very easy to tell the total number of Ku borrows you taken out. Takes a couple of clicks in "my account". My account and devices put the left drop down to kindle unlimited and the one to the right to returned. Bam. It gives you a total number showing as 1-whatever number. That is it. Very simple.
It has kept up with my borrows from the moment I subscribed, when I cancelled and re-subscribed. It kept all the numbers and books in my account. |
