It costs £10 (in the UK) to have special offers removed. Exactly the same price as the difference between buying it with or without special offers. I paid to remove mine. If you don’t like the special offer screen pay to remove them too.

Unless you absolutely need a water proof reader or want to listen to audio books, I'd recommend the $79 PW3

The Voyage screen has just been easier on my eyes, precisely because the text is crisp— but I think the PW 2 also had some nice contrast; the Voyage just happened to use the screen perfection of PW 2 and brought it to a 300 pi resolution. The newer kindles, which include the Oasis, just seem more faded despite higher resolutions at least to these eyes. I don't know why that is, but this seems to be Amazon's trend so at some point I will pick up another voyage or even an older kindle.

That's what I thought too, when I bought the Oasis. But after we got the option to install custom fonts, I found I actually liked the font-rendering on the Oasis more than on the Voyage (despite the same firmware, the font-rendering is somewhat different on the Voyage and on both the Oases). Also the 6'' screen just feels too small now. So I mostly read on my Oasis 2 with a custom font these days and only rarely pick up my Voyage...

I don't have any of the Paperwhites, but I've seen a video review where the text on the PW4 was clearly more faded than on the Oasis, let alone the Voyage.

I'm planning on upgrading from a pw3. Selling mine at a decent price. However reading reviews and comments. Many people keeps on saying that the screen and contrast is faded as washed out, that the text is not as crisp as the pw3. This is a massive downer for me. How bad of a difference is it? Have you noticed it? Does it take away from the reading experience

I also read about glares but I'm more concerned about the text not being as sharp as the pw3.

I am afraid that if I purchase it, and I don't like it. I won't be able to go back to my pw3.

Do you have any experience about it? Please advice me

Most stores have demos available, you might want to go check it out for yourself then decide.

Mostly Charis SIL Modified Larger or DejaVu Serif Eink, but sometimes also Bitter, Georgia for Kindle, Merriweather, Lexia DaMa, Neue Helvetica Medium.

For me, the difference was noticeable but it's not bad. Certainly not to the point where it's super distracting. YMMV.

That said, if I didn't need waterproofing, I would just stick with the PW3.

Yes noticeable but if you don't think of it it will gone. I'm using bookerly boldeness at 0, so a pretty "light" font, plus light at 9 almost all the time, and right now it doesn't bother me anymore. But you should definetely try it. Also, if i want i can see a little the cone of the centered led, it's not bothering me if i don't concentrate on it but given hownpeople says this is more even compared to the past i cannot imagine how it was in the older ones.

I wouldn't do an upgrade this soon

No it’s not. It’s like any other e-reader screen, some are better than others and no one can say what yours would be like. I have the Oasis 2, Voyage and Paperwhite 4. I read on all three equally, I have no issues jumping from one to the other.

I don't have any other Kindle to compare it to, but there is a visible "film grain" to the PW4 that isn't there on my Kobo H2O. Now the Kobo H2O doesn't have a flush screen and there's also no touchscreen layer (it's infrared touch).

So I think it's just a matter of additional layers between the display and you; and each additional layer just affects visibility somehow.

My ancient Story HD didn't have frontlight at all, so pixels were actually sharp and square, compared to any frontlight reader where the light layer adds some bluriness. But of course due to older display tech the contrast was much worse back then. I wonder what a modern display would look like if laid bare and stripped of its light layer and everything.

In all other aspects the PW4 is perfect though, at least mine has completely even light, no issues whatsoever. If waterproofness and flush screen add slightly to the blur, that's just something you have to accept.

It's a very high level complaint in any case.

I think it's just in the nature of lighted e-ink screens that each device will look a little different, even within the same model. So it's really hard to compare them.

Putting them all side by side they're all a little different. When I'm reading a book they're all the same.

My experience is similar regarding the screens, but compared to the Voyage rather than the PW3, which I traded in toward the PW4. The PW4 and Voyage are slightly different, but not so much so that readability is worse / better. There is about a one-notch offset on the brightness of mine, so the PW4 on 10 is the same brightness as the Voyage on 9. Color temp is about the same for both. The Voyage has slightly better contrast, noticeable when side by side, but I read on the PW4 for two days before actually doing the comparison. If I hadn't put them next to each other, I'd have sworn the screens were identical.

The button being on the bottom and not recessed bothers me more than I expected. And I don't know why, I don't bump it by accident or anything, it just seems wrong somehow.

I'm not certain, but I feel like the Voyage is getting better battery life than the PW4, even accounting for initial indexing of the whole 4 books I put on it to start. Power saver mode puts it almost on par but not quite. I'm basing this on the fact that I read for almost the exact same amount of time each night, I haven't actually timed it.

My Voyage is still my precious. The PW4 will be my secondary reader. I can also take it out on the boat when I'm in Florida without worrying about it too much, and it will be good as a spare should the Voyage have an issue. (Or at least, those are the reasons I'm using to justify why I just had to buy one.)

Hello everyone, I have just received my new Kindle Paperwhite 4 from Amazon DE. I also own Paperwhite 2. One thing I have noticed on new Kindle is that if you tap on back plastic it clicks. There is some space between back plastic and hardware inside (it is not tightly put together). I noticed that sound when I have put Kindle on table. Can anyone check if this is a case in other kindles paperwhite 2018. Thanks

Sounds like you have a defective one and should contact support for RMA.

I can notice very faint clicking if I put my head to the kindle and press on the bottom part, but I doubt you'd notice that when you put it on a table.
