That's not how you install the firmware. See https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...81&postcount=3 for instructions.

Unfortunately it doesn't fix the problem I have with search. The search itself works but if I tap on any one of the results it doesn't take me to the place in the book that the search result indicates - it just takes me back to the place in the book that I was last reading. It seems to think it is showing me the search result location because it shows me arrows for previous/next search results but pressing these also has no effect. It's totally broken.

I won't go on about it more here as it's not strictly limited to this firmware release but if anyone has a fix for that I'd be very grateful. Otherwise I may start a new thread about it.
Don't forget to Send the book to the device after you've edited the TOC...

Update: Ah, I followed some advice online, but it was wrong. Dumping the kobo-update-4.4.9298 folder into .kobo will do nothing. Dumping the *contents* of kobo-update-4.4.9298 into .kobo does the trick. I'll leave this post here just in case some other Mac user runs into the same problem.
Glad you solved your issue on your own. Thanks for sharing! The instructions can be confusing for Mac users because they are written from a Windows perspective. The way Mac OS downloads zip files and automatically opens them to a new folder with the update name means it's confusing whether you are supposed to copy the whole folder over or all the files inside the folder. I understand what you are saying because I also use a Mac and I had to think twice about it myself.

I had done this but just did it again to double check. I also deleted and recreated the TOC from files just to be sure. I still can't navigate to the search results.

Stop Press: I tried deleting the book from the device and resending it, rather than just sending it "over the top" of the existing book. Search seems to work now! Thanks for your help.

Sending it "over the top" doesn't rebuild the data in the database, you have to remove it first, because in other way the device doesn't detect it as a new one and processes it.

What Terisa said is correct. This is actually a cheat. If you manually sideload and replace a book, the device will remove everything about the book from the internal database and add it as a new book. This means you lose the reading status, bookmarks etc. The KoboTouch driver in calibre does some fiddling in the database to prevent this. This is useful if the purpose of replacing the book is if you are fixing text in the book. But, it doesn't work if you change the structure of the file including the ToC. If you are doing this, you can need to delete the book before resending it, either using the device or from calibre.

Just discovered that when you long-press the footer the info changes from pages to % read and to hours to go. Is this a new feature or has it always been there?

Wow, now I know how that keeps changing when I close my sleepcover! Thanks. Which is to say, I guess it's been in previous firmware versions, because this has been happening to me unintentionally for some time now.

I believe that's been there since the very beginning of Kobo eReaders.

For what it's worth, I sideloaded my update and have, so far, experienced no undue battery drain.
This comment by Question Mark triggered me. I had gone back to the 4.3.8966 firmware by restoring the factory settings and my battery drainage and front light problems were gone. Thanks to Question Mark I decided to give it another go and I updated again but this time by sideloading and not via wifi. And guess what, although it is still early days, everything seems to be ok now!

Someone earlier in the thread posted a picture of the homescreen that had "Collections" where the "Recommended" tile is.

Is there any way to get rid of the recommended tile? I never buy books from Kobo, and the titles that appear there are embarrassing as hell, and in NO way reflect the kind of books I read. (The 3 that appear are The Hunger Games, 50 Shades of Grey, and The Bible.) I have gone in and said "Not Interested" to all 40+ books on the list, but each sync puts back utterly awful books.....

(I'm on an Aura HD.)

Thanks....

I can't speak for others, but since I upgraded to 4.4.9298 (4 different KOBOs) I haven't seen 'Recommended' at all. The mid-right position has always been filled with 3 book covers from one of my Collections or one of my Authors. All covers have been for books actually loaded on the device.

I should probably also mention that I never use wi-fi and I don't have any Previews loaded either, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

recommendations seems to go away when/if you open a book that's in a collection with 4+ books, or a book by an author that you also have 4+ books from. It's not 100%, but it does seem to be the general consensus.

Have you tried going into Books and opening a Collection yet? My middle-right tile always shows the collection I most recently opened, but if you haven't opened any, maybe it defaults to Recommended.

Worth a shot, especially as testing it should only take a few seconds.
