Eyewitness to History: World War II by Stephen W. Sears - $0.99
Amazon US | Kobo | Google | B&N | Amazon CA
Quote:
". . . the greatest war of all time told as it is best told - by the people who lived it." - The Washington Post

All first-person accounts of great events have their own fascination, but the editors of American Heritage have discovered that people writing about World War II seem to tell their own story with particular passion and eloquence. That is one reason American Heritage has published so many of them - and why noted military historian Stephen W. Sears has selected the most compelling.

The result of his search is a uniquely moving and valuable anthology - a series of personal histories that, marshaled together, become an intimate history of the Second World War.

Here is Edward Beach, the highly decorated submarine skipper and author of Run Silent, Run Deep, recalling what it was like to be sent into hostile waters with torpedoes that didn't work; Charles Cawthon recounts the landing at Normandy Beach in a restrained and poetic narrative whose quiet humor does nothing to blunt the savagery of the experience; General James Gavin tells of the jump into Sicily and of a battle fought that never should have been fought; Hughes Rudd watched the war from overhead in a flimsy spotter plane, his "Maytag Messerschmitt; and William Manchester remembers a particularly audacious and hilarious scam that a reckless Marine buddy played on the entire army.

Some of the stories are heartbreaking, some amusing, some horrifying, but every one of them - whether told by the women who hammered fighter planes together or the men who flew them - glows with hard-won experience.

Architecture of Survival: Holocaust Diaries (WW2 Memoirs Book 1) by Israel Stein - FREE
Amazon US | Amazon CA | Amazon UK | Amazon DE | probably in other regional stores too

Quote:
A Jewish family survives the Holocaust hidden by a Polish family
In 1939, when the Second World War broke out, the Stein family escaped Poland. Paula, a polyglot architect, and Meir, a textile industrialist, fled with their only child, Israel, to Vilnius, Lithuania, and later to Bialystok, attempting to save themselves from certain death in the extermination camps.

In the midst of terror, there they found grace
In August 1943, the Bialystok Ghetto was emptied by the Nazis and all its occupants were sent to extermination. The Steins had managed to remain hidden in the Ghetto for five more weeks, before escaping to their new hideout—the home of a Polish family, backed by a German official, that gave them refuge. They remained hidden there for nearly a year, until the war ended, with the daily danger of being discovered and sent to death. They lived to see Bialystok liberated by the Russian Red Army, and eventually settled in the new state of Israel.

The events of the Holocaust as they were seen through the eyes of a real middle-class Polish Jewish family
Architecture of Survival brings forward the diaries Paula and Meir Stein wrote while in hideout during the Second World War, accompanied by the vivid visual memories of their son, Israel Stein, who witnessed the horrors as a child. It is a rare historical documentation, read in bated breath.

Portrait of a Cavalier
by Geoffrey Trease

William Cavendish, first Duke of Newcastle was a man with human appeal and versatility. Prominent though he was in the Civil War, his military reputation has been buried under Clarendon’s oft-quoted, dismissive judgement blindly accepted by subsequent historians. But those northern campaigns, ending so tragically on Marston Moor, are only part of a colourful life-story running from Elizabethan days to beyond the Restoration. Grandson of the legendary Bess of Hardwick, Newcastle expressed his own passion for building at Welbeck, Bolsover and Nottingham, while his other enthusiasms included music, literature, art, science, horses and, it is now evident, women

Geoffrey Trease (1909-1998) was the author of more than one hundred books, including children’s books. He revolutionised children’s literature and was one of the first authors to deliberately appeal to both boys and girls through strong leading characters of both genders.

But there are no ratings at Amazon yet! And only one at GoodReads. Are you sure that you want to live on the edge and take a chance on this ebook? Are you sure that you want to take such a leap of faith????

Jefferson is the third from last on the list at the Amazon website; Kennedy is the last one on the list.

There are some fresh ones at the beginning of the list--at least fresh to me; I may have missed them if they were marked down earlier.

Thanks.

I deduce that Kennedy is the last one on the list /because/ it was published 4 Apr 2017 and so has no track record yet and no reviews.

It's always worth a switch to publication date order.

Dark December: The Full Account of the Battle of the Bulge by Robert E. Merriam - FREE
Quote:
The Battle of the Bulge, first published in 1947 as Dark December, is a detailed account of the German Army's last major offensive of World War II.

Presented from both Allied and German viewpoints, the book examines events leading up to the offensive, the massive engagement of German forces against unprepared American units, and finally the turning back of the defeated German Wehrmacht. Author Robert E. Merriam, former chief of the Ardennes section of the U.S. Army Historical Division, had the unique opportunity—both during and after the battle—to interview leaders and sit in on important staff meetings. When the war ended, he was able to talk to German officers and to examine battle records of both sides.

Robert E. Merriam (1918-1988) was born in Chicago, Illinois and earned a M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1940. From 1942 to 1964, he was a captain in the United States Army.

While serving as director of the Metropolitan Housing Council in Chicago from 1946 to 1947, Merriam authored Dark December: the Full Account of the Battle of the Bulge.

From 1947 to 1955, Merriam was an alderman in Chicago and chairman of the Commission on Housing and Emergency Commission on Crime. During this period he co-authored The American Government: Democracy in Action with Charles E. Merriam. Merriam was the Republican nominee for Mayor of Chicago in 1955, but was defeated by Richard J. Daley, the Democratic nominee.

From 1955 to 1958, Merriam served as an assistant director at the U. S. Bureau of Budget. By 1958 he became the deputy director. During this period he authored Going Into Politics in 1957. Merriam ended his government career after serving as deputy assistant to the president under Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1958 to 1961.

"Walking the Nile", by Levison Wood, is part of today's Amazon UK Kindle Daily Deal at 99p. I watched the TV series of this last year, which was excellent, so I'm very much looking forward to reading the book: a travelogue about (as the title suggests) walking the entire length of the Nile, from its source to the point where it reaches the Mediterranean in Egypt. The author is a former paratrooper who is well known on British TV for his travel documentaries. Always very entertaining.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00K8WYP6A

Edit: I see that another of his books, Walking the Himalayas is currently also sale at £2.99. This book apparently won the "2016 Edward Stanford Adventure Travel Book of the Year" award.

Odd Man Out: James Mason - A Biography by Sheridan Morley

The reason for watching a James Mason film, as the film critic Pauline Kael once noted, was usually only James Mason himself.

Mason was actually pointed toward a career in architecture before acting overtook him during his third year at Cambridge. He went on to make an indelible impression playing emotionally haunted characters on stage and screen, such as one early stand-out role, Johnny McQueen in Carol Reed’s Odd Man Out (1947).

Mason and his first wife, Pamela, arrived in the United States in the late forties, and the Hollywood phase of his career lasted through the 1950s. It memorably included diverse classics such as The Desert Fox, A Star is Born (for which he was Oscar-nominated) and North by Northwest.

A Talent to Amuse: A Life of Noel Coward by Sheridan Morley

Noel Coward, ‘the master’, is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of twentieth century entertainment. Prodigiously talented, he blazed a trail through theatre, film and song on both sides of the Atlantic. In the theatre he wrote hit plays like The Vortex, Private Lives, Hay Fever, Cavalcade and Blithe Spirit. On film he wrote the war classic In Which We Serve and the timeless love story Brief Encounter. His songs, which number into the hundreds, include ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen’, ‘I’ll See You Again’, ‘A Room with a View’, ‘The Stately Homes of England’ and ‘Mrs Worthington’.
