Nope, fixed it again. "Taking something" implies that you are depriving somebody of a "thing". This is not the case in copyright infringement, that is precisely why it is not classed as theft - it does not deprive anybody of a tangible object.

I actually agree with the sentiment expressed in Slayda's original post, I just object to the use of misleading terminology, something that is sadly too common in this kind of debate. Copyright infringement is not theft, describing it as such trivialises the real crime of theft.

No, its the sad fact that you don't accept the fact that you are in fact stealing, which is wrong, that settles it. You download illegally because you feel you are entitled to something that isn't available legally. You rationalize your actions to make them acceptable to you. Fine. But don't trash people who live by the rules.

I don't think its right that others can edit your posts. Only those who post, or a moderator, should be able to edit......Moderators? Is there anything than can be done about this? It can get out of control really easily.......

Wow. All caps. Touched a nerve, did we? It doesn't matter who steals, or how much they steal. It still doesn't give you the right to. Or myself.

As far as I know, no one but you (or a moderator) can edit your original post, but in terms of editing quotes, not much the site can do to limit it, and still allow appropriate quote-snipping, etc.

Still, I'm inclined to agree that editing quotes by someone else to "fix" them is not a very friendly action.

I never claimed I felt I had a right to read books I don't pay for. I don't feel entitled. Stop trying to label me. I'm admitting that it's possible to keep a library of well formatted books from pirated content. The people on this board who do not admit to having read copyrighted content are hypocrites. I never said I was justified. I admitted it was in fact wrongdoing. Stop trying to assume your sense of morality is important to other people. We're different and we lead drastically different lives. Some people are fine breaking the law and some people aren't.

Get over your morally superior old-timey viewpoints and realize that piracy on this board is a giant elephant in the room. A whole lot of you have read content that you shouldn't have and yet you continue to preach about how much of a piece of scum I am. I'm not asking you to forgive me, I just don't think its productive or healthy for ebook enthusiasts to bury their heads in the sand.

Hey, that is the refreshing honesty I was talking about, not the fact that the guy has content that was not paid for. But I guess that after one deed that some judge dishonest, you can't possibly have an honest opinion ever again. I notice some seem to think entirely in black and white.

jakewastaken, just as you don't want to be "labeled" or have someone else assume things about you, I think it would be helpful if you don't assume that everyone who complains about downloading from the darknet is a hypocrite. There really are people who have never done it. I'm not claiming to be one, but I know of quite a few.

This is a topic that always seems to raise tempers, but sometimes the occasional nugget of useful information turns up that seems to justify leaving these threads running (like the information about how library systems work in other countries). So I'd like to ask, with my "moderator" hat on, that we try to keep this discussion as civil as possible.

(And no, I don't want to hear "but they said it first!")

I think desertgrandma was referring to the editing of quotes which are included in later messages.

"Fixed it for you" posts are fairly common on most of the forums I frequent and are used to point out errors or, more commonly, to change the meaning of a quote for humorous effect. Doing so without mentioning that you have done it is generally considered very bad form, although even then it is usually pretty obvious to anybody reading the thread what has been done.

I suppose I could go back and edit the quotes back to their original form and then change my part of the text to include the modified version of the quote. Seems like a waste of time though, given that it is obvious what is being done.

I read copyright content daily. Of course it's usually in books I paid for.
