Waiting for Snow in Havana: Confessions of a Cuban Boy by Carlos Eire is on sale at Amazon Canada for $CDN 1.99
https://www.amazon.ca/Waiting-Snow-H.../dp/B000FC0WFQ The blurb: “Have mercy on me, Lord, I am Cuban.” In 1962, Carlos Eire was one of 14,000 children airlifted out of Havana—exiled from his family, his country, and his own childhood by Fidel Castro’s revolution. Winner of the National Book Award, this stunning memoir is a vibrant and evocative look at Latin America from a child’s unforgettable experience. Waiting for Snow in Havana is both an exorcism and an ode to a paradise lost. For the Cuba of Carlos’s youth—with its lizards and turquoise seas and sun-drenched siestas—becomes an island of condemnation once a cigar-smoking guerrilla named Fidel Castro ousts President Batista on January 1, 1959. Suddenly the music in the streets sounds like gunfire. Christmas is made illegal, political dissent leads to imprisonment, and too many of Carlos’s friends are leaving Cuba for a place as far away and unthinkable as the United States. Carlos will end up there, too, and fulfill his mother’s dreams by becoming a modern American man—even if his soul remains in the country he left behind. Narrated with the urgency of a confession, Waiting for Snow in Havana is a eulogy for a native land and a loving testament to the collective spirit of Cubans everywhere. |

The Girl with No Name: The Incredible Story of a Child Raised by Monkeys is $1.99
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BNPI7FG The unbelievable true story of a young girl who is abandoned in the Colombian jungle and finds asylum in the most unlikely of places—with a troop of capuchin monkeys In 1954, in a remote mountain village in South America, a little girl was abducted. She was four years old. Marina Chapman was stolen from her housing estate and then abandoned deep in the Colombian jungle. That she survived is a miracle. Two days later, half-drugged, terrified, and starving, she came upon a troop of capuchin monkeys. Acting entirely on instinct, she tried to do what they did: she ate what they ate and copied their actions, and little by little, learned to fend for herself. So begins the story of her five years among the monkeys, during which time she gradually became feral; she lost the ability to speak, lost all inhibition, lost any real sense of being human, replacing the structure of human society with the social mores of her new simian family. But society was eventually to reclaim her. At age ten, she was discovered by a pair of hunters who took her to the lawless Colombian city of Cucuta where, in exchange for a parrot, they sold her to a brothel. When she learned that she was to be groomed for prostitution, she made her plans to escape. But her adventure wasn’t over yet . . . In the vein of Slumdog Millionaire and City of God, this rousing story of a lost child who overcomes the dangers of the wild and the brutality of the streets to finally reclaim her life will astonish readers everywhere. |

Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry (Oxford Textbooks in Psychiatry) by Tom Dening and Alan Thomas Broad in scope and with global appeal The Oxford Textbook of Old Age Psychiatry, second edition is the definitive resource on old age psychiatry. It comprehensively provides the latest knowledge on the science and practice of treating later life mental disorders, focusing on the health and social issues that arise around ageing, dementia, co-morbidity, dependency, and the end of life in progressively ageing societies across the world. Published in previous incarnations as the much loved Psychiatry in the Elderly, this core resource for all old age psychiatrists, trainees, and other clinical professionals treating older people's mental health, has been fully revised, updated, and significantly expanded. Oxford Textbook of Infectious Disease Control: A Geographical Analysis from Medieval Quarantine to Global Eradication (Oxford Textbooks In Public Health) by Andrew Cliff and Matthew Smallman-Raynor a comprehensive analysis of spatial theory and the practical methods used to prevent the geographical spread of communicable diseases in humans. Drawing on current and historical examples spanning seven centuries from across the globe, this indispensable volume demonstrates how to mitigate the public health impact of infections in disease hotspots and prevent the propagation of infection from such hotspots into other geographical locations. Containing case studies of longstanding global killers such as influenza, measles and poliomyelitis, through to newly emerged diseases like SARS and highly pathogenic avian influenza in humans, this book integrates theory, data and spatial analysis and locates these quantitative analyses in the context of global demographic and health policy change. Beautifully illustrated with over 100 original maps and diagrams to aid understanding and assimilation, in six sections the authors examine surveillance, quarantine, vaccination, and forecasting for disease control. The discussion covers theoretical approaches, techniques and systems central to mitigating disease spread, and methods that deliver practical disease control. Essential information is also provided on the geographical eradication of diseases, including the design of early warning systems that detect the geographical spread of epidemics, enabling students and practitioners to design spatially-targeted control strategies. FREE Pdf Book Designed to Stir Interest of Students in Upper-Level Chemistry Courses.
This ebook is directed to teachers (professors) of chemistry in institutions of higher education, such as colleges and universities. There may not be many of them in MobileReader land, but I think that anyone with a casual interest in chemistry would really like this book and maybe even find it fascinating.
This ebook has an abundance of very helpful, color photographs. Title: Chemical Demonstrations Booklet: Exciting Students about Chemistry and Helping Them to Understand Chemical Concepts. Format(s): Pdf. Author(s): Magda Wajrak; Tim Harrison (contributor). Publisher: Edith Cowan University? Pages: i + 57. Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): N/A. Price: $0.00. Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available from there: N/A. Book Description (from the Introduction): Chemistry is a visual subject and there are many abstract concepts which students find difficult to grasp. Chemical demonstrations can be a valuable tool for teachers to help students to understand difficult concepts and at the same time excite students about chemistry . . . . For a number of years now I have been teaching first year foundations of chemistry unit to students who have no or very limited chemistry background. I observed that the students struggled with many chemical concepts and also were as excited or interested in chemistry as I was, keeping their attention in a 2hr lecture was a challenge. I realised that I needed to do something to capture students’ attention and interest during the lecture. So I decided to bring ‘chemistry’ into the lecture theatre and perform chemical demonstrations during each lecture which were relevant to the topic being introduced and which helped students to grasp chemical concepts. However, finding chemical demonstrations which were safe enough to perform outside of the lab, didn’t take up too much time, were easy to implement and used relatively cheap chemicals was rather difficult. I began to search for suitable demonstrations by talking to other chemistry lecturers . . . . Many teachers have expressed interest in these demonstrations and therefore I decided to put together a booklet in collaboration with detailed information about each demonstration. The original booklet was created in 2008. In 2010 I teamed up with Mr Tim Harrison, Teaching Scholar from the University of Bristol, UK, and we decided to collaborate on a new version of the booklet . . . . The demonstrations featured in this booklet are appropriate for a range of levels from year 8 up to year 12 [Australia, G.] and including foundation of chemistry units at University. Each demonstration has been thoroughly tested. For each demonstration, there is a list of equipment needed, preparation instructions, demonstration procedure and safety information . . . . Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download due in part to the fact that it was offered as a download on at least two publicly-accessible webpages of Edith Cowan University: https://www.ecu.edu.au/schools/natur...demonstrations and https://www.ecu.edu.au/schools/natur...gdalena-wajrak. From the Host of Dog Whisperer, the #1 Seller in Dog Psychology at Amazon. Now $1.99!
Won't be of any benefit to me--I'm a cat person. But owners of those hyperactive, slobbering, clumsy, loud, aggressive mammals called dogs may get a lot out of this book (I know, I'm going to get hate mail).
![]() At $1.99, the markdown of this ebook from the digital list price is a very nice 83%. Be the Pack Leader: Use Cesar's Way to Transform Your Dog . . . and Your Life. By Cesar Millan; Melissa Jo Peltier. Rated 4.3 stars, from 492 reviews at the present moment at Amazon. Print list price $16.00; digital list price $11.99; Kindle price now $1.99. Crown Archetype, publisher. 336 pages. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000UZPH3A. Book Description Bestselling author Cesar Millan takes his principles of dog psychology a step further, showing you how to develop the calm-assertive energy of a successful pack leader and use it to improve your dog’s life–and your own. Filled with practical tips and techniques as well as real-life success stories from his clients (including the Grogan family, owners of Marley from Marley & Me) and his popular television show Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan, Cesar helps you understand and read your dog’s energy as well as your own so that you can move beyond just correcting behavioral issues and take your connection with your dog to the next level. The principles of calm-assertive energy will help you become a better pack leader in every area of your life, improving your relationships with friends, family, and coworkers. In addition, Cesar addresses several important issues for the first time, including what you need to know about the major dog behavior tools available and the difference between “personality” and “instability.” Ultimately, what emerges from Be the Pack Leader are both happier dogs and happier, more centered owners. Cinnamon says to tell you that he is NOT hyperactive (unless you mean sleeping 23+ hours a day is hyperactive), he also does NOT slobber (just licks on occasion), he walks like a cat, only barks to be let back in. Now as far as aggressive, only towards big dogs. Well there was that one obnoxious person that had been told repeatedly to leave him alone.
Oh and he will pee on an ant bed. Your cats are probably louder than Cinnamon. |
