It certainly won't update to 3.4.2 (that requires manual work), and it won't revert to 2.5.8 either.
Hopefully, any attempted update will simply fail. But a few people did post that their FrankenKindled DXG was starting to have unresolved issues connecting to the Kindle Store. Last edited by eschwartz; 02-22-2016 at 10:36 AM. |

then if I want to continue access kindle store that I should either use newman's guild to manual update to 3.4.2 or fallback to v2.5.8 by backup?
Thanks a lot! |

Fallback to your 2.5.8 backup and it will work.
I don't know about newman's update -- it might need tweaking. Keep in mind you can still use Archived Items, and you can still use the browser -- just not the integrated Kindle Store. You can buy books from your PC. |

I guess Amazon is discontinuing SSL in their shop and replacing it with TLS (any sensible reason why update to 3.4.x is required I can thing of)?

They have done it to other models fairly recently. The failure to change the version number does seem to be a mistake. |

I would really like to know exactly what is being changed. My DXG is currently using 3.1 from Yifan Lu's kindleupdater.zip so Amazon will never apply the critical update. I had given up hope of using the 3G.
I also have a K3G using 3.4.2 and am trying to get the critical update so I can find out what they are changing. If they are only changing the certificates then I could copy them into my DXG. When updating to 3.4.2 I happened to intercept an OTA update: FWUOupdate-06-558700031-611680021.bin.partdldtmp.partial I wonder if that had the critical update? Does anybody know exactly what is changed with the critical update? |

I looked at the /usr/java/lib/security directory inside my K3G immediately after updating to 3.4.2 a few months ago and found this:
Code:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Jun 1 2012 . drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 1024 Jun 1 2012 .. -rw-r--r-- 1 1004 5000 48913 Oct 7 09:47 cacerts -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 250 Dec 27 2010 java_permissive.policy -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3968 Dec 27 2010 java.policy -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 8097 Jun 1 2012 java.security -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2915 Jun 1 2012 local_policy.jar -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2433 Jun 1 2012 US_export_policy.jar Code:
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Jan 13 2011 . drwxr-xr-x 7 root root 1024 Jan 13 2011 .. -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 48913 Jan 13 2011 cacerts -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3238 Jan 13 2011 java.policy -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 7276 Jan 13 2011 java.security -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2921 Jan 13 2011 local_policy.jar -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2440 Jan 13 2011 US_export_policy.jar I suppose I can try to transfer the new cacerts from K3G 3.4.2 to my DXG 3.1 and see what happens. Maybe I can figure this out. |

Okay, looking at the current download for the DX 2.5.8 (S.N. B004), the internal datestamps vary from 2010 all the way to 2015-04-20
Somehow I thought that firmware was older... ... Which leads to the question -- given that Amazon releases incremental updates (for devices as old as this), how exactly are these supposed to work? ![]() |

Thanks eschwartz for pointed me to /usr/java/lib/security for the cacerts file.
I just looked at the Amazon update file for the DXG to the 2.5.8 with the 09 unit: Code:
-rw-r--r-- 1 1001 1001 53385 Feb 10 2011 550650009-555370010.ffs -rw-rw-rw- 1 1001 1001 128 Feb 10 2011 550650009-555370010.ffs.sig -rw-r--r-- 1 1001 1001 53398 Jan 13 2011 rootfs_md5_list.tar.gz -rw-rw-rw- 1 1001 1001 128 Feb 10 2011 rootfs_md5_list.tar.gz.sig -rw-r--r-- 1 1001 1001 372 Feb 10 2011 update-09-550650009-555370010.dat -rw-rw-rw- 1 1001 1001 128 Feb 10 2011 update-09-550650009-555370010.dat.sig -rw-r--r-- 1 1001 1001 66524 Jan 13 2011 update-bootloader.tar.gz -rw-rw-rw- 1 1001 1001 128 Feb 10 2011 update-bootloader.tar.gz.sig -rw-r--r-- 1 1001 1001 96964 Jan 13 2011 update-patches.tar.gz -rw-rw-rw- 1 1001 1001 128 Feb 10 2011 update-patches.tar.gz.sig The current Amazon update page leaves the DXG at 2.5.8 build 555370010 and still requires the critical OTA update to pass the March 2016 server changes. I wonder if the build number will change after the OTA update. Maybe 04 is not the same as 09? |

Bad news here. I moved the cacerts file from my K3G 3.4.2 to the DXG 3.1 and was not able to access the Amazon store nor wikipedia with the DXG. The browser now works with the K3G so there must be more of a difference than just the cacerts.
