ok, it is not a server side issue - it is refreshrate issue - DXG eink controller specific. COuld beresolvedby contrast hack or anything, but not working today for me

That is for the 2.5 series firmware (and kernel) -
Put the current 2.5.8 firmware on your Kindle.

Hi all DX/DXG user,

I received an email from Amazon 10 days ago, told me that my DXG v3.2.1 need to online update otherwise I cannot use wireless after March 22nd:

Dear XXX,

Your Kindle e-reader requires an important software update to continue downloading books and using Kindle services.

This important update applies to Kindle e-readers released prior to 2014. Visit our Help page for a complete list of impacted devices, and follow these steps to receive the update:

•Plug your Kindle in to charge during the update.
•Turn on wireless.
•Leave your Kindle plugged in and connected to the wireless network overnight, or until the update is complete.

The software update will download and install automatically, even if your device is asleep. Your device may restart multiple times during the update process. You will get a final confirmation letter on your device when the update is complete.

If you do not update the device software by March 22, 2016, you will no longer be able to access Kindle services or get the update via connecting to a wireless network. To resume access, you will need to manually update the software on your Kindle. Please visit our Help page for more details on how to update automatically.

On the help page, DXG was still only up to 2.5.8. I am running 3.2.1 by now. Anyone know should I connect to 3G to let it update as they require? What version I will have after the update? Will it able to update from 3.2.1 to 3.4.2 or will it fallback to 2.5.8? Or for the worst case, it will crash as I am using hacked 3.2.1?

It certainly won't update to 3.4.2 (that requires manual work), and it won't revert to 2.5.8 either.
Hopefully, any attempted update will simply fail.

But a few people did post that their FrankenKindled DXG was starting to have unresolved issues connecting to the Kindle Store.

then if I want to continue access kindle store that I should either use newman's guild to manual update to 3.4.2 or fallback to v2.5.8 by backup?

Fallback to your 2.5.8 backup and it will work.
I don't know about newman's update -- it might need tweaking.


Keep in mind you can still use Archived Items, and you can still use the browser -- just not the integrated Kindle Store. You can buy books from your PC.

I guess Amazon is discontinuing SSL in their shop and replacing it with TLS (any sensible reason why update to 3.4.x is required I can thing of)?

seems to be. but strange thing is that DXG will be required to also 2.5.8 only..... no version number change. not sure if they are going to patch TLS into the old 2.5.8....

It is a very minor change, easly patched.
They have done it to other models fairly recently.

The failure to change the version number does seem to be a mistake.

I would really like to know exactly what is being changed. My DXG is currently using 3.1 from Yifan Lu's kindleupdater.zip so Amazon will never apply the critical update. I had given up hope of using the 3G.
I also have a K3G using 3.4.2 and am trying to get the critical update so I can find out what they are changing. If they are only changing the certificates then I could copy them into my DXG. When updating to 3.4.2 I happened to intercept an OTA update:

FWUOupdate-06-558700031-611680021.bin.partdldtmp.partial

I wonder if that had the critical update? Does anybody know exactly what is changed with the critical update?

I looked at the /usr/java/lib/security directory inside my K3G immediately after updating to 3.4.2 a few months ago and found this:

The cacerts file seems newer than the rest and might have the certs from the critical update. The DXG stock at 2.5.8 looks like this:

Okay, looking at the current download for the DX 2.5.8 (S.N. B004), the internal datestamps vary from 2010 all the way to 2015-04-20

Somehow I thought that firmware was older...

...

Which leads to the question -- given that Amazon releases incremental updates (for devices as old as this), how exactly are these supposed to work?

They show the last update for the DXG was created in Jan and Feb 2011.
The current Amazon update page leaves the DXG at 2.5.8 build 555370010 and still requires the critical OTA update to pass the March 2016 server changes. I wonder if the build number will change after the OTA update.

Maybe 04 is not the same as 09?

Bad news here. I moved the cacerts file from my K3G 3.4.2 to the DXG 3.1 and was not able to access the Amazon store nor wikipedia with the DXG. The browser now works with the K3G so there must be more of a difference than just the cacerts.
