What???

Didn't you know the excellent and ubiquitous Evince, GIMP, Inkscape are all Adobe products?

I don't know what you are trying to insinuate...

@cybmole, I believe technically you can get Adobe Reader on linux. It hasn't been updated in over half a decade, but still...
Also the Flash plugin, but it's on life support and Flash is on its way out anyway.

Actual fonts themselves don't really count, for obvious reasons.

I still don't understand why this problem only manifests on a few systems, hard to believe that most people regularly run Disk Clean Up as admin with the Cleanup Windows Updates box checked

Och well, so it goes

lets hope windows 10 blows all this trouble away.

even with all that cleanup stuff done, I can still detect a very brief freeze on a cold start, but as W10 is almost here, I am not going to pursue this further. This particular PC has had its W7 installed for 4+ years , and has been rescued from all sorts of disasters, so would be overdue for a clean rebuild were it not for W10.
Out of curiosity I started calibre on another win 7 PC last night ( installed as a backup, never used) and saw no freeze at all. that PC had a clean rebuild a few months back. it is lined up to replace this one, once I feel brave enough to migrate all email related stuff- i have test-migrated all my calibre/sigil/ADE settings but migrating outlook 2007 is such a pain

I find Thunderbird works pretty well. It's also dead easy to migrate settings and data.

What is the problem with migrating Outlook? Shouldn't you just be able to copy the database? Or does the new computer not have Outlook?

As an aside: note that atmfd.dll has been identified as having a severe vulnerability allowing remote web sites to take control of your computer. A recent windows update corrects it. That update apparently has had a few problems of its own. I don't know whether installing this update will help or hurt the freeze, given that for me the security scan happens during boot.
I was appealed by this experiment. I have 8 copies of that Adobe shit on my system (system32, syswow64... and winsws files), but alas the system refuses completely to alter those files, as protected by some system stuff. I really does not care about the opentype font, so I'd like to try it... i'll
will first try to remove those fonts from the system...

Some of them will hardlinks to the common data stream. If the file size, timestamp and checksum are the the same then its a safe bet they they are.

Others will be different versions of the library. Its related to the dependency hell problem (known as DLL Hell in windows land) and being able to run 32 bit Windows programs on 64 bit Windows (Windows on Windows)

Before removing fonts trying running Disk Cleanup as admin with the Windows Update Cleanup option checked - you might have to run it multiple times

i know how to do it - it is just tedious - go to import and export - backup the main folder,as pst; then backup the archive folder as pst, then export the reg keys which hold the account details and passwords...then reverse all that on the new PC.... but then that does not copy over all the rules and filters - I have yet more instruction for that somewhere.... I have moved some accounts to imap in thunderbird and I think all I need do there is backup and restore tbird's app data folder.... i considered moving all to imap but I like the old fashioned local filters and folders set up that I've had for years in outlook

Thumbs up a solution suggested by Chaley. IT WORKS !!!

I tried to suppress fonts, like arab or coreen, but they are all protected. So I decided to try the renaming of this damned atmdf.dll file. It was quite hard to do, because the 2 actives version (system32 and sysWoW64 are protected by
'trusted installer'. I dound the instructions, changed the 'owner' of them, and then gave me FULL capabilty.

Then i renamed both files to atmdf_save.dll, and restarted the system.

IT WORKS !!!!!

After reboot, when I start Calibre, I now get 15 secondes to start the
main screen, but the system clock is still running all the time; There is no more system lock (clock was stopped for 18 seconds before)

YOUPIE !!!!

I hate Adobe. It is always requesting to 'update' Flash, and if we do as
COMMANDED, it installs some nutty programs. You have to use the direct
Flash site to load it by hand and refuse the intruder. And it start again 3 days later. (I just disabled the check in Firefox to get rid of this)

Sorry for this bitter comment. But I am happy with Calibre now!

Why am I not surprised that Outlook stores crucial information in registry keys.
Yes, Thunderbird does the right thing IMO and stores account info and suchlike in the AppData.

I would suggest reconsidering the idea of moving your old POP3 setup over to IMAP; the important thing is getting all your old, sorted data uploaded via IMAP to your email server, then you can simply sign in on a new computer and sync.
Syncing is something you want to do. There is no purpose in restricting yourself to archaic email protocols just because it was the only option when you first set up your email.

I know more than a few people who are kicking themselves for using POP3, because when their ancient computers stopped working, they were stuck. Booting up to a linux LiveUSB in order to copy the .pst is a considerable degree of awkwardness that is far more uncomfortable and tedious than spending some time, NOW, to future-proof your email!

I use windows, but I do not use MS office, I am using libreoffice, and I get my email from the website and not from an email app. I have noticed that if I do a large job with calibre that it really slows things down but I have only once crashed my computer due to calibre and that was when I tried to convert my complete library of over 5000 books at one time. Yes that was stupid on my part and I have not tried that again.

I am pretty sure there is no simple way to get years of archived mail ( much of it from old, closed e-mail accounts ) back onto any server.
e.g. all my ebay buy / sell messages , and many many purchase receipts/ confirmations from other stores. i could just keep all that, offliine, in outlook by copying an archive file, I suppose.

I have migrated all but my most used account to IMAP, but I still can't get to like it's arbitrary imposition of folders, and I am still never quite sure what commands like delete, empty trash, archive.. are really doing. i think "delete" works differently inside a client than in the gmail web browser for example ( most accounts are a on a gmail platform as customized by virgin media but they are moving off of that very soon - so they say )

meanwhile - back to the freeze issue, I had cause to reboot again today & when I first manually launch calibre I still see a short ( 5-10 seconds ) time in which the mouse icon just spins and will not move. it is short enough to be tolerable though.

I might have a go at disabling the adobe dll using microsoft's instrucitons...
