Ack! Edgar Allan Poe wrote love poems! I knew that he wrote in a few other genres than horror--for example, he was a newspaper columnist for quite a number of years--but I never did know about his love poetry. Seems more than a little bit out of character for him, not just because of the ubiquitous horror short stories, but also because he often was not a very loving person toward others, e.g., fellow authors/writers.

Anyway, nice find. I've picked it up and am looking forward to listening to it.

It's a classic and one of (if not) my favorite poems. It was the last complete poem he wrote and wasn't published until after his death. Here's the poem in its entirety:

Annabel Lee -- Edgar Allan Poe

Spoiler:
It was many and many a year ago,
In a kingdom by the sea,
That a maiden there lived whom you may know
By the name of Annabel Lee;
And this maiden she lived with no other thought
Than to love and be loved by me.

I was a child and she was a child,
In this kingdom by the sea:
But we loved with a love that was more than love—
I and my Annabel Lee;
With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
Coveted her and me.

And this was the reason that, long ago,
In this kingdom by the sea,
A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
My beautiful Annabel Lee;
So that her highborn kinsman came
And bore her away from me,
To shut her up in a sepulchre
In this kingdom by the sea.

The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
Went envying her and me—
Yes!—that was the reason (as all men know,
In this kingdom by the sea)
That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

But our love it was stronger by far than the love
Of those who were older than we—
Of many far wiser than we—
And neither the angels in heaven above,
Nor the demons down under the sea,
Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee:

For the moon never beams, without bringing me dreams
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And the stars never rise, but I feel the bright eyes
Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
Of my darling—my darling—my life and my bride,
In the sepulchre there by the sea,
In her tomb by the sounding sea.

I've loved Annabel Lee since I was in high school! It is definitely one of my favorite poems of all time.

Huh. I like the Sarah Jarosz song Annabelle Lee but I didn't realize it was based on a poem, much less one by Poe. You learn something every day.

Per ChristianAudio's newsletter today, they have a flash freebie available ahead of Valentine's Day. If you are interested in "You and Me Forever: Marriage in Light of Eternity" by Francis and Lisa Chan you can get it here for the next 72 hours (minus a few).

Enjoy!

The poem seems like it would lend itself to being put to music. I wonder if anyone has ever tried?

I'm not very sophisticated, though, when it comes to love poetry. My favorite love poem is still the one that goes "Roses are red . . . ."

I said that Poe often was not a very loving person toward others. One whom he genuinely seemed to love was his 13-year-old first cousin, whom he married. Ack! But, to be fair, women did marry at a younger age than they do now . . . .

I must have had a deprived childhood--all that I ever had to read from E.A.P. was cool stuff like "The Pit and the Pendulum."

LearnOutLoud -- Free Audiobook of the Month -- exp 28 Feb
Quote:
The great speeches collected here serve as a good indicator of how Lincoln's thinking evolved during a turbulent era, especially with regard to his views on state's rights and the role of national governance. One can also track how his outlook on slavery started as a question of constitutional interpretation to growing alarm over a territorial crisis that eventually engulfed the nation in civil conflict. As one studies Lincoln's words, his clear, sober-minded rationale for the course of action he thought the nation should take reflect his legal background, and offer a compelling portrait of the inner workings of a mind that was both decisive when necessary and infused with a burning compassion that nevertheless unclouded his judgement.

Included here are the following speeches, presented in chronological order:
  • Address Before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, January 27, 1838
  • The House Divided Speech, June 16, 1858
  • The Cooper Union Speech, February 27, 1860
  • Lincoln's Farewell Address, February 11, 1861
  • First inaugural Address, March 4, 1861
  • The Emancipation Proclamation, January 1, 1863
  • The Gettysburg Address, November 19, 1863
  • Second Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865
