Red burgundy? The reader software does burgundy really well... Seriously, as a Mac owner, the reader software was one of the biggest strikes against Sony. If it hadn't been for calibre, I probably would have switched brands just because of that. |

ETA: also if I had to reset my reader or my computer - it would be as if I got a new one and would need to download again. Last edited by Purple Lady; 02-12-2014 at 08:15 AM.

It will affect already purchased ebooks only if you've *never* downloaded them before. If they've been downloaded even once with the old DRM, all future downloads of that particular book will be with the old DRM, as far as I understand things.

The sticky part can be that there is a limit to how many computers they allow for each account and it doesn't matter if you de-authorize the old computer, it still is counted (Amazon does things differently). An additional slot for an authorization will eventually be allotted to you, or if you have a particularly bad run of luck and go through a lot of hard drives or something, you can phone Adobe and plead your case for another slot.

I'm curious if ADE software is on my machine for library download purposes. I don't think it is because when I downloaded an epub from the library, I couldn't figure out how to read it. I had no idea if I had digital editions and was too lazy to try and figure it out. I didn't think I had it. I ended up reading part of the book in the "library cloud" instead. I think I will go look and see if I can find a digital editions something or other. I know it's not loaded on my desktop icons, but...I should be able to find it. Maybe.

I know it's a popular way to control software, but it's ridiculous. I own photoshop and they allow TWO. TWO. I had one machine die on me and loaded it on my new one. Then I had to travel and needed to get work done on my travel machine. When I tried to load it, well, both of my licenses were in use (dead computer and new one.) It was NOT fun getting it all set up when I had to travel. TWO. Of course now they are trying to move to a subscription model so that in addition to paying an arm and a leg, you are tied to paying it monthly...RANT GOES HERE. Well, it's still not unreasonable to assume people might have multiple devices (and they really have no right to decide on that number either. And if they are going to arbitrarily have such a number it needs to be clearly stated when you buy the license.) I don't have kids either, but if I just count the devices we own, I can get to 3 without...4 without leaving the living room.

My Palm is older than my iTouch, which is older than my Sony Reader, which is older than my Sony Experia Tablet Z.

My Kobo Desktop updated to version 3.6.0 2/11/14 (d0a9bf18ea) sometime between Tuesday and today. The RM version isn't named, but the copyright dates are 1995-2011, so still the old stuff. I thought I'd take a chance and see if Kobo had added Sony devices to the new software. It recognizes my 350, and is attempting to sync with it. My Adobe ID is correctly identified under the device tab (different than my Kobo ID). I've synced the 350 through ADE 1.7 and the 3M Cloud desktops in the past, and managed collections with the older Library software, (Sony Reader desktop chokes and hangs on my 350) along with drag&drop for non-DRM books. *All* of my Kobo purchases have been automatically added to the Digital Editions directory, there seems to be no user control over what content is synced. Hopefully the sync will complete before it fills up the memory - I have almost 200 books in my Kobo account and a few of them are fairly large files. I also have a new and empty Kepub directory. So there's that. Curious to see how this all shakes out. |
