An Affair to Dismember
by Elise Sax
(The Matchmaker 01)
Note: I am currently reading this or was but what I read so far I loved it! It's a cozie more than romance I found her writing to be very well done and her Characters POV very funny. This is an author to watch.

Quote:
Certain to appeal to fans of Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Crusie, and Katie MacAlister, Elise Sax’s hilarious series debut introduces matchmaker-in-training Gladie Burger, who stumbles into a dangerous quagmire of murder and red-hot romance.

Three months has been Gladie Burger’s limit when it comes to staying in one place. That’s why Gladie is more than a little skeptical when her eccentric Grandma Zelda recruits her to the family’s matchmaking business in the quaint small town of Cannes, California. What’s more, Gladie is also highly unqualified, having a terrible track record with romance. Still, Zelda is convinced that her granddaughter has “the gift.” But when the going gets tough, Gladie wonders if this gift has a return policy.

When Zelda’s neighbor drops dead in his kitchen, Gladie is swept into his bizarre family’s drama. Despite warnings from the (distractingly gorgeous) chief of police to steer clear of his investigation, Gladie is out to prove that her neighbor’s death was murder. It’s not too long before she’s in way over her head—with the hunky police chief, a dysfunctional family full of possible killers, and yet another mysterious and handsome man, whose attentions she’s unable to ignore. Gladie is clearly being pursued—either by true love or by a murderer. Who will catch her first?

Praise for An Affair to Dismember

“Elise Sax’s new Matchmaker series is off to a rousing start! . . . Sax gives the comic mystery genre a new spin. . . . A fun read sure to entertain.”—RT Book Reviews

“Fans of laugh-out-loud romantic suspense will enjoy this new author as she joins the ranks of Janet Evanovich, Katie MacAllister, and Jennifer Crusie.”—Booklist

“Elise Sax will win your heart.”—New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis

“In the tradition of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series, Elise Sax’s new novel is a funny, sexy ride.”—Valerie Frankel, author of Four of a Kind

“What a fun book! It will leave readers begging for more.”—Kim Gruenenfelder, author of There’s Cake in My Future

I have to finish up the various reading challenges at AAR, but otherwise late November/December I read a lot of novellas.
I'm interested in both. It's just so hard to find Christmas books that aren't like far in a series. Stand alones or first in series are rare.

I'm sappy I love the ones with kids in it. I read alot of harlequins this time of the year because they seem to use alot of plot moppets. I need to make a Christmas shelf at GR so I can share my recs with everyone here.

Harlequin does Christmas best!

I started the shelf so far just the ones I have read in the past 3 years.

Lots more to read and add this year! I always buy one year ahead of time then throw some recent in.

Christmas regency novella The Christmas Cuckoo

http://www.amazon.com/The-Christmas-...dp/B00G4T2SII/

Mistaken identity. Christmas. Family. War hero coming home. It has it all!

One of my all time faves. It was originally published in Putney's 2002 Christmas Revels anthology. Can't remember if it was free recently or I ponied up for a novella for 99 cents LOL.

Well now that is smart... I tend to ignore holiday themes the rest of the year and now find myself scrambling to find ones.

Found a few Christmas/Winter lists on GR, including this one, which looks like a good mix of historical/contemporary/big 5/indie:

I'm off to expand my holiday tbr!

The Defiant Governess (Lessons in Love #1) by Andrea Pickens (Signet Regency 1997)

Quote:
When the high-spirited Lady Jane Stanhope finds herself facing a marriage ordered by her father, she flees home, disguises herself as "Plain Jane" and lands a governess position to the ward of the reclusive Marquess of Saybrook.

Winning the love of the shy little ward is easy. Sparking arguments between herself and the mysterious Saybrook is delightful fun. But both are putting her heart in danger.

Now she's caught between desire and her deception, for the most a titled lord can offer to a mere governess is ruin.
Texas Homecoming by Maggie Shayne (Formerly title "The Homecoming" Silhouette 2001)

Quote:
A HEART YEARNS
Luke Brand wishes for what he’s never had–family. Aside from an overprotective mother who died young, he’s never had that–until he drives his rig into Quinn, Texas to meet the family he’s never known. His cousins welcome him with open arms. 3 months later he’s still there, selling his semi to buy an abandoned house for back taxes, dreaming of settling down with a wholesome woman and raising some kids of his own.

OPPOSITES ATTRACT
Jasmine is not wholesome. She’s a waitress and sometimes exotic dancer at a Chicago club. A classically trained dancer, Jasmine doesn’t mind doing what she has to. It’s all for her son, Baxter. She’d do anything to protect him from the world.

DANGER PURSUES
When Baxter witnesses a murder at the club and becomes a target himself, Jasmine takes him and runs. Posing as her best friend, shot dead by the same killer who’s after Bax, she heads for Texas to hole up in the house her roomie inherited but wanted no part of. The only problem with her plan is the sexy cowboy who’s already living there.

Sold on You (Tropical Heat #2) by Sophia Knightly

Quote:
Just Say Yes!

Confirmed bachelor Dr. Marcos Calderon is in hot water. He needs to come up with a fake fiancée fast or he'll disappoint his beloved grandma who's arriving on the next flight to meet her. Proper social worker Gabriela Morales should fit the bill--but tonight, in that sexy, slit-to-there red evening gown, she looks anything but proper.

Gabriela only volunteered for the hospital's charity bachelorette auction to benefit a cause dear to her heart. Now she's reeling from the hot doctor's bid of fifteen thousand dollars for a weekend date with her! She's not sure what Dr. Handsome has in mind, but the smoldering look in his eyes is unmistakable...

My Christmas recommendation is for Once Upon A Winter's Eve by Tessa Dare. It's a novella in her Spindle Cove series. It's not the first in the series but you don't have to have read any of the others to enjoy the story.

The not part of a series Christmas books I've read in the past (and kept ) are (novellas unless otherwise indicated):
  • Ask Her at Christmas by Christi Barth [D/1 star]
  • One Winter's Night by Lori Borrill [Blaze anthology] (B+/4 star)
  • Must Love Santa by Nina Bruhns (C+/3 stars)
  • Captive Christmas by Shannon Curtis [free website read] (B/4 stars)
  • Home for Christmas by Kate Davies (C/2 stars)
  • Wish List by Sylvia Day (C+/3 stars)
  • After the Music by Christine Feehan (B-/3 stars)
  • Blame It on the Blizzard by Jennifer Greene (C-/2 stars)
  • One Perfect Night by Rachael Johns (C+/3 stars)
  • A Christmas Kiss by Merline Lovelace (C/2 stars)
  • Cole for Christmas by Rhonda Nelson (B/4 stars)
  • All I Want for Christmas by Nora Roberts (C/2 stars)
  • Home for Christmas by Nora Roberts (D/1 star)
  • A Nice Girl Like You by Alexandra Sellers [Silhouette Yours Truly] (D/1 star)
  • Holiday Sparks by Shannon Stacey (B+/4 stars)
  • In the Sprirt by Shannon Stacey (B-/3 stars)
  • Mistletoe and Margaritas by Shannon Stacey (B-/3 stars)
  • Snowbound with the CEO by Shannon Stacey (B-/3 stars)
  • Yule Be Mine by Charlene Teglia (C+/3 stars)
  • The 6'1" Grinch by Tiffany White (C/2 stars)
I have others in print. These are the ones I have in digital in Calibre so easy to access via my Christmas/Hanukkah tag. There are some more Harlequin novellas, etc I have in digital which I read in print but don't remember well enough to rate so they are on my To Be Reread list.

Just FYI, I consider C's a perfectly good read. I usually rate my books against other books by the same author. So a C by one author may be a better book to me than a B by another author. Since I simply delete books I don't like (unless by a favorite author) my 5 star ratings may tend to skew lower than others. 2 or 3 stars are average to me meaning I still liked the book well enough. I try to reserve my 4 and 5 star ratings only for books I especially liked.

For anyone new to this thread, this is a book that's been free for quite awhile. It's the start of a series. I think it was formerly a Harlequin. I picked it up either last Christmas, or even the year before, but finally got around to reading it and it was quite enjoyable (and has 3 cute plot moppets ).
