Apple had to update the look. Ios 6 was looking outdated.
But I think they overdid the flatness and simplification. Now, you get so much white on the screen, with no borders or visual clues to separate one element from another.. Buttons that have no borders so you can't tell sometimes they're buttons or just text. Popup dialogs that are nothing but a white box and text aren't just simplified, they're ugly and they don't even pop from regular content. They didn't just go away from skeuomorphism, they threw out a lot of gui elements that were functional. Throughout ios 7, I see again and again their decision to sacrifice clarity and functionality in order to conform to a "look" that frankly isn't all that attractive. I mean, when you have to put things like "increase contrast" and "make font bolder" in settings, you're basically admitting you made things too hard to see. Apple would've gotten so much more criticism for ios 7 if they didn't have the reputation for design. If MS had done some of the same things, they would've been ripped for it. In fact, they did get ripped for it with windows 8.. http://tristanedwards.me/what-ios7-should-look-like . |

I am getting used to iOS7 now. I certainly like it better on my phone than on my iPad. I regularly browse MacRumors. Sounds like there are improvements coming in 7.1. Here is just a sample.

I am 60 in favor of iOS7 and 40 against
I like some of the improvements but some of the coloring is pretty bland I also have an issue with the auto correcting It seems to work differently to previous OSs Example double spacing often adds an "s" (or "y" etc) instead of a period (".") It can be very frustrating |

Oh yes, autocorrect is out of control in iOS 7! In French, it insists on replacing the comma with a question mark (on the French keyboard they are the same key).
ETA: on the other hand, iOS 7 has finally let me opt out of the Game Center, and stopped harassing me about it. That's a relief. |

Months later, iOS 7 looks just as crappy to me as it ever did. I'm on the verge of ditching the iPhone and getting a Nexus 5 instead. Android 4.4 KitKat looks ten thousand times better than the hideous iOS 7; I've been enjoying KitKat on my Nexus 7.
I already would have bought the Nexus 5, if it hadn't been so outrageously overpriced here in Europe -- it costs around $550 here, as opposed to $350 in the US. This makes me think about waiting for the next iPhone iteration -- a 5- to 6-inch screen would be nice, despite the repulsive, dumb and limiting iOS; after all, I spend most of my time in non-Apple 3rd-party apps, thank heavens. (This is why I never considered buying the original iPhone -- Apple's software is generally unbearable, and proverbially dumb. iPhones and iPads would be worthless without the App Store and the plethora of outstanding 3rd-party apps.) |

I don't expect iPhablet to be cheaper, but if I hate anything with a passion, it's geographical discrimination.
![]() In contrast, Google keeps overcharging their European customers both in terms of Nexus 7 (which I somehow swallowed, having paid $350), but even more so with Nexus 5 (which I'm no longer willing to accept, at least as of today). If a Google representative knocked on my door and offered me Nexus 5 for the US price of $349 (and 1 year of warranty is perfectly enough for me), I'd buy it instantly... Even the European VAT of 20% would somehow be tolerable, bringing the price up to $420 or so... but $550 ![]() ![]() PS: We're getting off-topic; a few weeks ago, I launched a dedicated thread for this issue. |

You got it backwards, as far as I know, Google sponsors the devices in a few markets, while in others people get to pay the full price.

I must say that iOS7 has grown on me. Maybe I've just forgotten what the previous ones looked like. Subtle changes to the OS Bookworm_Girl. I like what it shows so far.

For me I think it is that looking back now on iOS6 on an iPhone4 makes it look outdated compared to my new iPhone 5s. Or, if you open an app that hasn't made the adjustment then it seems a bit jarring at first. There are still many things I don't like so looking forward to the minor updates to see what improvements are made.

Hopefully iOS 7.1 will go a long ways to improving the aesthetics. I really like the new functionality in iOS 7, but aesthetically they screwed up some. It is growing on me, but I still hate all the white backgrounds in several of the apps, especially on the iPad where there is even more white to stare at!

Agreed. It's the white backgrounds and weird color choices like mustard yellow that annoy me most. It sounds like 7.1 is going to fix some of the boldness text issues and some of the app icons will get muted colors from bold neon. Hopefully it will look better.

I have iOS5 on my iPhone 4, iOS6 on my iPad 3, and iOS 7 on my iPad Retina Mini. Out of the 3, I prefer iOS 7 - I like the clean, uncluttered look it gives. Unlike some of the posters here I don't have any problems with buttons not having borders, etc.
