Yes it does.
Adobe have access to the same information whenever you authorise an eBook through ADE.

No, the authorization happens with the vendor's copy of Adobe Content Server (in this case Overdrive's). Adobe isn't involved in the transaction.

Looking at this picture:

http://www.adobe.com/products/conten...hitecture.html

It looks like Adobe is contacted per sale/loan? From the picture, I take it the "Aggregator" (the light green box) is Overdrive (server), and the "Adobe Hosted Infrastructure" is Adobe (server)?

Oh, you're right. I thought that the "License Signing Server" software was part of the Content Server at the aggregator. My mistake.

I can read it. If you have any questions (regarding the text in the pictures), I can tell you what it says.

Putting on my tinfoil hat, it looks like Adobe may be just as capable as Amazon in collecting information.

What information Adobe requires in order to do their job is much more limited, though. (Not that this is a guarantee that they aren't sending more data, mind you.) All that they need is "Adobe ID johnsmith@gmail.com checked out/bought book X".

They could theoretically collect info, but they don't have the customer data to use it.

the publishers arent concerned about Adobe having the information anyway. They are concerned with AMAZON as a publishing competitor having access to the information. Amazon can see what is popular/trending from the other publishers and then target adds at them to buy books with similar themes from Amazon's own imprint.

They could, but do they? I've been an Amazon customer for years, a Kindle owner for 1 1/2 years and an Overdrive user with a Kindle since it started last summer.

The only recommendations I've ever gotten from Amazon have been based on what I've looked at on Amazon's website or purchased from Amazon. Not by any overdrive connection. And I have probably borrowed at least 50 books from the library through Overdrive/Amazon.

They don't even list my Overdrive loans in my browsing history, only on my Manage Your Kindle page. And since I delete those after I finish the book, there is no record there either.

If they were doing this or going to do this, would they not have done so with me by now?

This mess with Penguin started soon after Kindle lending started. So maybe it's something to do with Amazon and if 3M is not involved in Kindle lending, maybe Penguin will go with 3M. This is all pure speculation based on the fact that Penguin did for a bit withdraw Kindle lending.

A better model would be to have publishers simply rent e-books directly, let Libraries focus on physical books, not e-books (or movies or video games for that matter). Say $1.99 for 2 weeks. Of course, this will never happen
Of course, there are print books that have been at libraries for a rather long time in good enough condition to still be loaned out years after being bought.

My first thought was that they continuously ask me to buy books I borrow from public libraries.

My second thought was that, just maybe, that's because I often look at reviews on their site before borrowing the book through a library.

My third thought was to put it to the test. So I just borrowed a random book from the New York Public Library, one which I had never heard of before. Then I cleared my browser and went to www.amazon.com. And at the bottom left of my computer screen, with no need to scroll, was an advertisement for the book I just borrowed.

Then I went to Manage My Kindle and selected the the pull-down Action menu for the book. I choose the sixth choice, Return This Book. But the third choice was -- Purchase this book.

This doesn't bother me, but, well, if I was a librarian, I sure wouldn't appreciate it.
