because the guy running the place was basically chased out of germany for credit card fraud(and other crimes). that is hacking into databases, stealing credit card numbers and either using them himself fraudulently or selling them to others to use fraudulently. the guy should never be in charge of a business that accepts credit card transactions

hah i just realized this- the New Zealand arrests were made in Coatesville, Auckland New Zealand. I grew up in Coatesville.... PA, US

Absolutely right. Other crimes too. First conviction in 1998 for fraud, receiving and disposing of stolen goods and falsely calling himself a "Dr.". Was convicted for insider trading later.

For those of you interested: There is an article in the local german newspaper "Kieler Nachrichten" about Mr. Schmitz, who was born there and grew up in the area.

Well, not sure about you, but I would not.
Especially after google (!) charged me "non-refundable 7.99 Euro for 5000 happy stars" (some idiotic game currency) without even asking for password on my tablet, just after I've bought something their market using a PC and was silly enough to leave my credit card info (!!!).

It isn't that they were blatantly facilitating copyright violations on a global scale, but that they were planning to set up an indie music site?

Ummm, I think that Megaupload was shut down because the guy running seems to have been in to damn near everything illegal he could get his hands on with the exception of kiddie porn.

yeah apparantley they bragged about their ability to delete child porn almost while it was still being uploaded. but everything else for some reason took much much longer

One thing that I find kind of funny is how little Megaupload was making. Considering it was one of the largest sites in the world, $30 million a year isn't much.

Mine has a especial protection plan. Fully protected.

Long time ago my CC info was stolen and charged me 10k in less than 48hrs. Info was sold to different parties and different countries around the globe. I paid zero and everything was dropped few weeks later.
