I thought that CHM is...CHM. Just like lrf is lrf. Does it mean you can create CHM in ways that differ from each other and the end files only look the same on the outside?

Sounds as if that's the case if the conversion works with some but not others.

According to Wikipedia:
"Some CHM files behave poorly under IE7. Printing Topics will crash the CHM viewer on malformed HTML."

Given that the Gen3 currently only has limited support for HTML, and CHM files are "compiled" HTML, perhaps the issue occurs with CHM files that use HTML features that the Gen3 doesn't support.

Just a sec...
I'm new to this whole ebook business and as I have not (yet) bought a single ebook in my life (still waiting for my reader and afaik there are no mobipocket oder msreader apps available for the mac) I lack in experience... But is my understanding of your post correct in that msreader (.lit) books sold in Online ebook Stores are not DRM protected? Wouldn't that mean that they can be easily converted to any format (including mobipocket) since they are just plain html and image files with an ODF descriptor bundled using a compression algorithm similar to mscabinet?

No, that's not true. LIT files have DRM, but there is a program you can use to remove the DRM.

so how long is it taking people to receive the Cybook in their hand from date of placing the order for it on the internet?

From what I could see, it was just a few days (between 2 and less than a week, depending on country) for those who managed to get an order in for the first batch.

For everybody else, we're waiting for the December 5th shipment. So in my case, it'll probably be about 6 weeks between order and arrival (crossfingersandtoes.)

As far as I can tell, there wasn't any limbo period where people ordered unknowingly after Bookeen exceeded their first batch, though!

It just dawned on me. PVI makes the screens for all of the eInk readers. Amazon just announced (and promptly sold out of) their Kindle. I'm betting that with the ballyhooed Kindle release, coupled with the release of the Hanlin V3, iLiad V2, Sony PRS505 and the release of the Bookeen Cybook Gen3, PVI might be experiencing a state of 'too many orders for the production line to handle'... That would explain the delays. That also might force PVI to either expand their production capacity or license the tech to other manufacturers. (Please let it be the latter!)

After the initial batch (one of which I got) no more have been shipped. The next "batch" is due to ship on Dec 5th.

Multi-format e-books, e.g. from Baen or Fictionwise, typically include both LIT and PRC without DRM, but many new titles will only be sold for each format separately and these have DRM. Fictionwise also sells DRMed e-books, and their FAQ About MultiFormat & Secure Formats is a good introduction.

It is easy to strip the DRM from Secure LIT e-books (at least under Windows). Once you have a DRM-free LIT e-book, as you say, it is easy to convert it to other formats because it us just an OEB e-book (html, images and an OPF metadata file).
