As for battery life: Kobo says 10 days or 10,000 page turns. Both Nook Touch and Kindle say two months with 30 mins of reading time per day.

I think the nook touch has 2G of storage right?

Note that Kindle only just changed this to match the nooks specs. While I understand the marketing need to do that, I'm certain the old spec of up to 1 month was far more realistic, and even that was a bit liberal. I typically go about two weeks before charging, sometimes less if I use wireless and the kindle-powered cover light a lot, obviously. I suspect the new nook will prove to be similar.

I think the form factor is decent. The perimeter is a little thick, but it's still a small device and that space could be good for holding. The back looks like a good thing for people who prefer holding it coverless. I wonder what the covers will look like, so far as mounting mechanism.

Without a more established outlet for ebook sales, Sony may not have much incentive to compete with lower priced devices. Not sure what they're gonna do. I don't know what their sales have been like thus far, though.

I only read on my Kindle, so syncing isn't needed.

What I would like syncing for is audiobooks, but it'll never happen across my devices (Sansa Clip+, Kindle, iPod touch).

Sexy??? They've been couped up too long. They need a dose of real world. This is a sexy device

and right there is the danger of going overboard to "out spec" the competition. Once people realize they aren't getting anywhere close to 2 months, the flames and pitch forks come out.

Just do an average of 2 hours with wifi off. I don't understand that especially when they know it's going to come back to haunt them.

It's not fair to compare storage without mentioning which have storage card slots and which do not.

Whispersync is very nice. I have been able to email myself books, sync between devices, and buy books online. I don't use the browser but it is nice knowing that it is there.

I'm not sure. I think by now in the age of smartphones and tablets and netbooks, the average consumer probably knows that companies will exaggerate about this stuff, and will expect the worst. I know that I scoffed at BN's 8-10 hours of battery time on the Nookcolor, and was pleasantly surprised when we consistently got closer to ten hours on the device.

When you have to put a phone on a charger every single night without fail, charging a reader once per month as opposed to once every two months doesn't even matter anymore.

I wish they would stick to hours rather than days. Less misleading.

Speaking of which, and noting that Nook is running Android, I wonder if it will be possible to run apps (officially sanctioned or otherwise) to extend functionality. A Dropbox app for example would be nice to obviate the need for USB tethering. And yes, touch enabled Chess. <g>

Go to the covers page on the B&N website, click on any cover, and then click on "See Demo." There's a video that shows how it works. It's quite clever. I especially like the little built-in push point on the back of the covers so you know where to push to turn the reader off and on.

That shape reminds me of the EB1150. It was an ergonomic marvel, the most comfortable ebook to read on for long periods before or since. It used a combination of buttons and touch screen to give the user first rate control. The more I think of it, this new nook seems to have used some of the same ideas but updated them.

The EB1150 was made in about 1999-2008 or so. It was too heavy and had a back-lighted green screen smaller than our six inchers, plus a limited number of books compared with what B&N has.

This new nook is looking pretty good. Think I want to go over to a B&N store and get the feel of one in my hand.

On top of that they price them extremely high and have the worst bookstore platform out of the the 4 ebookstore . (BN, Amazon, Kobo and Sony)

Just plain odd. They make good looking devices, they really hit their mark with 3 6 and 950 series but you would never know nor why would pay such a high price tag, especially if you just a general reader who doens't need some of the extra PDF type of capabilities.

In Germany B&N and Kobo are complete no-shows, while Amazon has just started its German Kindle shop. Sony Readers are widely available in bookshops and shops for electronic stuff, though.
Perhaps it is simply not attractive for Sony to sell their readers at rock bottom prices in the US, trying to compete against readers that are mainly being tied to specific shops.
I personally do consider the quality of the casing as a decisive aspect of an ebook reader. This isn't a wifi router that is hiding beneath some cupboard. You hold a reader in your hands for hours at a time.
Additionally the PRS-650 also serves as an mp3 player. For me this is more important than a wifi connection.
