Kobo processes
Hi all,
I am trying to put together something similar to this project: https://github.com/Mavireck/Kobo-Dashboard In the code, there is a script that turns off a bunch of Kobo processes: Code:
# Stop kobo software because it's running killall nickel hindenburg sickel fickel fmon > /dev/null 2>&1
What I'm really interested in figuring out is how to disable the default home page on the Kobo, and to stop the clock from being updated. Thanks in advance. |

Hindenburg is the crash handler (for... obvious reasons ^^) .
Fickel is barely used anymore. The basic idea is that if you want to kill nickel, you *have* to kill the full set of *el daemons + hindenburg to avoid sickel throwing a tantrum . (PS: The canonical source for that list is the KOReader startup script, as how the environment of whatever kills nickel is set dictates whether you'll be able to restart it sanely without having to reboot). |

Perfect thanks for the info, especially the list of processes to bring down with nickel. |

Hey,
sorry if this is kind of a stupid question but how I would I go about password protecting the root SSH access? I tried logging in as the root user and setting a password for that user using the passwd command but either the password wasn't set for some reason or it isn't checked when logging in over SSH because I can still connect without a password. There is a second user called admin but I was kind of scared about just changing random user passwords around because I don't know if that could end up with my reader bricked. On an unrelated sidenote I can confirm for any potential future readers that these tools still seem to work on a Kobo Clara 2E. Last edited by Scrath; 01-06-2024 at 12:06 PM. |

@Scrath:
c.f., the comments around `SSHD_OPTS` in `/usr/local/stuff/bin/stuff-daemons.sh` You might also want to disable telnet, which is also patched for passwordless logins. |

The only thing missing should be USBNet support, which I'll be working on Soon(TM) ;p.

I've just taken delivery of a new-to-me Kobo Clara HD and having a good time exploring it. I've used your "one-clcik" to install KFMon, KOreader, Plato and other good things , got wifi working (seems to be conflicted if it tries to talk to a b/g/n radio, but b/g is fine). Now I want to ssh into it so that I can look at its innards and maybe tweak it a bit. After I found the Kobo's ip I tried sshing into port 22 and got nothing. So I'm trying to load this package of tools.
The file that downloads is kobo-stuff-1.6.N-r18901.tar.xz . I used 7-zip (yes, on a win-10 PC) to make a .tar file and sideloaded it to the .kobo directory. It didn't work as expected: ejecting and disconnecting the Kobo did nothing -- the file remained in the .kobo directory unchanged. Just to be sure I tried the .tar.gz file -- nothing there either. Looking back at the instructions, it seems it should be a .tgz file. Is this correct? I can probably figure out how to untar then tgz the file if I have to, but should this be necessary? Or am I missing something or (perhaps) were the utilities installed along with the one-click software and I just don't know how to use them? I'd appreciate some help with my ignorance and some guidance toward success. |

Thank you, Frenzie.
I was all "I didn't say it clearly enough ... the .tar.xz file unzips to a .tar file which untars to all the files, not to a .tgz." But then I thought it through. "Are these people using windows?" I asked. "Probably not." I answered. I went through the process once again: same behavior using 7-zip to do all the conversion. I did notice that a cryptic message flashed past. Then i fired up WSL and used Kali's tar for the untarring. That worked -- I got a directory structure with the .tgz file in place. So I'd say that 7-zip not only untars the .tar file, but then continues to process the .tgz -- obviously not what I wanted. So thanks for your assurance that the .tgz was in there somewhere if only I kept looking. I've loaded it onto my Kobo, it updated, and all is well. |

Odd. Running on a Windows 11 24H2 build 26120.670, I tried 3 different ways.
I dragged one of the KoboRoot.tgz files to my Libra Colour in the .kobo directory. When I safely ejected, the update process came up. No need to use WSL or a Linux VM. |
