I have this memory that I read the first, Wizard's Bane, but I have no memory of it at all. I may have to put these on my wish list in case they go on sale, or we get a big Kobo discount again. (My TBR is way out of control, so I'm not buying on spec these days. At least, I'm TRYING not to. )

I do recommend it, particularly if you've ever been a computer programmer. Lots of "in jokes".

Yup, that was what I remember about it. I'm not a programmer, just an IT Pro, but I know enough programming to be dangerous.

I completely understand .

The books were unavailable from Baen for a long time, but I see that they're back on sale again now.

I finished The Magicians on Wednesday and wasn't all that impressed. In my view it was just a mashup of Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia with "adult" content thrown in. Adult meaning lots of drinking and some sex and language. It was supposed to be a satire/parody of the above but fell flat to me, maybe because I like the others so much.

I also had a couple long flights last week and needed a break from The Magicians so I read The Hobbit as a fun break. I still pictured scenes from the 1977 (?) cartoon movie as I read this and enjoyed it immensely.

I read them in paper a long time ago. I am going to have to buy them from Baen and reread them. Thank you Harry.

I'm a real fan of the Kris Longknife books and in fact, they're on my "must finish series" list for 2015. I was all ready to pull the plug on the first Vicky Peterwald book when I read some reviews indicating that the love-making scenes were quite explicit. That was a bit of a turnoff and I decided to pass them up. I'd be interested to hear what you think about the action & character development vs explicit sex.

I'm only active in three online fora, but this pattern is used quite a lot on all three of the fora that I frequent.

I quote myself -- sometimes just in part -- to provide some continuity in the information I'm sharing with the others in the forum. Just like I quote another member's post and then immediately follow with my comments, I'll quote myself. It also provides a linked thread of posts -- had you noticed that you can click icon in the quote to go back to the quoted post?

I tend to just skim over sex scenes in books. It is hard to explain, but I ignore the sex scenes. My eyes sort of jump over them until I reach the end, then I resume normal reading.
I know there were sex scenes in the two books but, I could not tell you how many or what happened.
In the second book she is less promiscuous and is turning into a thoughtful and caring person.

Well said. Explicit sex scenes are nowhere as titillating for me either now that I'm no longer a fourteen-year-old. I do remember reading the James Bond books and seeing the movies back in the day, which seemed hot then, but would be very tame now. I just jump over sex scenes now.

Read next a library loan, The Caves of Steel by Asimov.

Enjoyed this murder mystery set in a futuristic Earth. This book was written in 1953 and it shows. Bentley's dialogue was especially dated. Some of Asimov's over population ideas were thought provoking. He was always very interested in human psychology regarding societal advancements and regressions. I don't know how I would react to a human-looking robot. Perhaps, that is the question Asimov wanted to leave his readers.
Rated C [3 stars].

Marathon binging C.J. Cherryh's Foreigner series (over halfway through Explorer now) since I've missed two, or three or??? recent books and couldn't remember which was the last one I read.

Started on June 4th, 2015.

Prior to that I stampeded through all nine of the Fleet of Worlds and Ringworld books in a bit under 3 weeks. The amount of reading time I get in a day varies. If I have all the time I want... I can chunk through a 450~500 page book in a single sitting, like I did with each of Forstchen's Lost Regiment series. Sit down Friday evening, close the back cover and hello Saturday sunrise.

I finished Deadlight Hall by Sarah Rayne (#5 Nell West & Michael Flint) yesterday. As usual a nice and easy paranormal mystery. Maybe a bit more gruesome than previous books in this series.

I just find them tedious in the extreme. I honestly don't know why authors put them in books.
